I had the exact problem and I found someone who recommended reseating the keyboard cable. I opened up the back and easily reseated it. I also creased the cable around the factory crease and that worked to help while it was still open. I put everything back together and once I tightened everything down the keys stopped working again. ARGG!!
I loosened the screw directly above where the keyboard is seated on the motherboard and viola it started working again! I removed that screw and we haven't had an issue since.
To locate the screw, turn the laptop over and there are two screws in the middle of plastic on left and right. The left screw is the one in question. It is the screw closes to the enter button. Hope this helps someone out!

Hi 🙂
Ok, so I got an hp chromebook (14) about a month ago and everything has been Great until some of my keys started to not respond (U/Y/H etc). I scoured the internet for days to find a solution (including this message board). Somewhere out there I caught a glimpse of a little blip of information that stuck out to me. Someone mentioned something about thinking that the problem didn't originate with the keyboard nor the motherboard. The problem seemed to stem from an Extension! Their solutions were to reset/powerwash the computer. Something about that struck me a certain way and I was at my wits end and really didn't want to send it back to the manufacturer as other than the key issue, I'm in Love with the chromebook.
So, before I committed to the drastic measure of powerwashing my CB, I decided to go to my 'manage extensions' area (just right click on any of the extensions in the upper right hand corner of the browser...click on the bottom link titled 'manage extensions'). I went through and got rid of random extensions that I had recently added prior to having my issue. Extensions such as 'yummly', a couple of sling box player extensions that were suppose to help me view dish anywhere on my CB but never worked properly (part of me suspects that it was those faulty extensions that caused my issue), there were other random extensions that I got rid (not too many) that I can't remember. I decided to stick to the 'name brand' extensions and get rid of less familiar ones. OH, I was trying to use 'free' streaming tv extensions as well, and I got rid of those too! Which could have been the problem, I don't know.
After that, I haven't had the problem and that's been about 2 weeks ago! I was so ecstatic that that was all that was causing the problem 🙂 I noticed there are a TON of message boards with people at their wits end with this issue. So, I decided to visit as many as I can, to let people know 🙂
I hope if you're still having the problem, that this helps.
