Hi,

My HP EliteBook 840 G5, whenever I restart or shut it down, stays with the Caps Lock light on and won’t boot. Sometimes I manage to start it after holding the power button for several minutes, but other times I have to disassemble it and disconnect the CMOS battery to get it to turn on again.

Once it’s on, it works fine.

I don’t know what else to do! I noticed that Windows is unable to install the update "HP Inc. – Firmware – 1.31.0.0".

What can I do to fix this?

Thanks

Hello.

The HP Firmware 1.31.0.0 is BIOS update. Reason for it to not install properly could be because a BIOS password is set, or because the EFI partition does not have enough space - the update is unpacked there and then executed during laptop startup.

You can arrange for more space in the EFI partition with these instructions. A workaround is to download the same BIOS update package from 840 G5 download page, and create a bootable USB drive when the wizard asks how to proceed.

Laptop not shutting down properly is very likely caused by a faulty driver or software. I recommend updating all your HP laptop drivers either from the same page or downloading the HP Assistant (from the same page) and for a somewhat more streamlined operation.
