HP Envy 17-j073ca
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi, I;m looking for help to see if anyone has any ideas regarding my HP envy 17-j073ca.  Previously when I tried to turn it on it gets stuck on the Hp logo with the spinning wheel of death.  I've scanned the other posts and have tried:

1)  Shutting power off and removing battery, waiting 5 minutes, restarting with lockup still present.

2)  I've tried the F11 key and it locks up before getting to any recovery menu screen

3) I've tried F2 and run system component diagnostics on the processor, memory, and hard drives.  The hard drive diagnostic passes, but the computer locks up and freezes whenever I try to run the processor or memory diagnostic.  When I run the memory test from the bios screen it passes although the test is very slow.  Takes about 5-10 minutes to complete 1 cycle of the test.

4)  I've tried selecting legacy in the bios menu and lock up still happens.

5)  The last resort was to reinstall Windows 10  using a USb key.  With the USb key inserted, the computer will get to the screen that allows me to choose 64 bit or 32 bit win 10 install.  Does not matter which one I choose, the files load off the USb key and then the Hp logo and spinning wheel appears and locks up in that screen for over an hour with no change.

I'm at a loss to explain what the cause of the lock up is and why I cannot reinstall the OS.  Is it possible the CPU and or memory is damaged which is why it freezes up when I try to run the F11 diagnostic program on it, yet I can run the diagnostic program on the hard drive and other components?  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Welcome to HP Community

I have gone through your Post and would like to help

This could be an issue with the Memory or Processor. May I know where did you get the Recovery USB Drive?

Did you create one or ordered on form HP?

Have you disabled the Secure Boot before enabling Legacy boot?

If the issue persists after disabling the secure Boot, I suggest you contact HP Support for Service Options

Thanks for the reply.   On a hunch that maybe the boot drive was faulty, I removed the boot drive from the laptop and hooked up the secondary hard drive as the new boot drive.  After I hooked it up,  the laptop could not detect an OS and immediately allowed me the option to enter diagnostics.  I tested the secondary drive and the memory with the diagnostic program and they both passed.  I was then able to reload windows 10 with a USB key that I made and now the laptop works normally.  When I hooked up the initial faulty primary drive into the secondary drive position, the laptop would not even read it and display it as being present.  So I will assume that the original primary drive failed which was why the laptop could not read off it when trying to load and froze up.
