My Envy crashed, I tried to reboot znd never got as far as the hp logo that appears durinf boot.  I press the oower button, the Power button LED illuminates, fan starts and the Caps key begins to flash. Seven to ten seconds later the laptop shuts down and the power button LED extinguishes. Any hints as to what the problem might be. I did not run an update so the problem is not software update. Any and all help will be greatly aprpreciated.

  1. Identify the Issue:
    • Record the exact behavior of the LEDs during the boot process.
    • Understand the basic boot-up sequence to identify where it fails.

Troubleshooting Steps

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Disconnect the AC adapter and remove the battery (if removable).
  • Press and hold the power button for at least 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the AC adapter (without the battery) and try to power on the laptop.

Check LED Blink Codes:

  • Observe the blink pattern of the Caps Lock LED. Count the number of flashes; it provides a specific error code.
  • Consult the HP documentation for the meaning of the blink code.

Examine the Environment:

  • Ensure that all cables and connections are secure.
  • Isolate the laptop from electromagnetic interference sources.
  • Check that the power source and AC adapter are functioning properly.

Visual Inspection of Hardware:

  • Look for signs of physical damage, loose connections, or dust.
  • Inspect components such as the display, battery, and keyboard for abnormalities.

Update BIOS and Drivers:

  • Before the failure, if any drivers or BIOS updates had been pending, ensure they were completed correctly.
  • If possible, enter the BIOS setup by pressing F10 during boot and load the default settings to see if it helps.

Thanks for your support.

The blink codes are five long and three short. I Googles "HP Blink Codes," and found the problem listed as RAM failure. I hope that's the problem as a new systemboard costs over $400.00.

A pattern of five long and three short blinks does indeed point to a memory (RAM) failure. The good news? This is often easier (and cheaper) to resolve than a systemboard issue.

 

Here’s what you can try next:

1. Reseat the RAM:
If you're comfortable opening the back panel, gently remove and reinsert the RAM module(s). Sometimes, a poor connection can cause boot failures.

 

2. Try One Stick at a Time (if applicable):
If your laptop has two RAM sticks, test one at a time in each slot to isolate a faulty stick or slot.

 

3. Replace the RAM:
If reseating doesn’t help and you’re still getting the same code, the RAM module may need replacing.

Replaced both memory sticks. Powered up laptop. Power LED illuminates and after 7 secods the fans start. Never see the "hp" logo and laptop shuts down after another 7 seconds. This time there were no blink codes. Any and all helpwill be appreciated. Please note that this laptop was only 14 months old when it ceased to function.

@Ray_1942, thanks for the update — I know this must be really frustrating, especially on a relatively new device.

 

Since you've already replaced the RAM and the blink codes are gone but the system still powers off after a few seconds without reaching the HP logo, we might be dealing with a deeper hardware issue — possibly the motherboard or CPU.

 

Here’s what you can try next:

 

CMOS Reset (BIOS Reset):

Disconnect power, remove battery (if removable), and hold the power button for 30 seconds.

Some models also have a CMOS battery you can reseat or disconnect briefly.

 

Minimal Boot:

Remove all non-essential components (SSD/HDD, extra RAM, peripherals) and try booting with just one RAM stick.

I couldn't find a CMOS battery but tried all of your suggestions.  Still doesn't boot but now ther are two sets of blink codes. First there are Five long and three short, then there are five long and two short .

@Ray_1942, I hear you, and I know how disheartening this has been, especially with a relatively new device. Thanks for your patience and for trying all those steps.

 

You're now seeing two blink codes5 long, 3 short (memory failure) followed by 5 long, 2 short (BIOS corruption). This combo points to a RAM issue that may have affected or been compounded by BIOS corruption.

 

Here's what we can try next:

 

1. BIOS Recovery (if possible):

Power off the laptop completely.

Press and hold Windows + B keys, then press the Power button.

Keep holding Windows + B for about 10–15 seconds.

If successful, the BIOS recovery should initiate.

 

2. RAM Check (Again):

Make sure the replacement sticks are fully compatible with your model (voltage, frequency, size).

If you still have the old RAM, try booting with that — sometimes BIOS updates can be fussy with new modules.
