HP Envy x360 14 inch 2-in-1 Laptop PC 16-ad0000 (8Z967AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

Hello!

Device: HP Envy x360 16-ad0000ca. I am loving this device, a wonderful and fast laptop (notebook? whatever). But there is one huge issue. Whenever I am just using it, unplugged or plugged in, it will freeze. I could be on Instagram, YouTube, discord, anything, really. It freezes/crashes, will sit for maybe a minute, it may reboot, may not. There is nothing in Event Viewer, drivers are fully updated, and BIOS is F.07 (updated fully). The specs are as follows: 16-inch 2.8/3K 120Hz OLED, Ryzen 7 8840HS, 16GB RAM, 500GB NVMe SSD, Radeon 780M Graphics. Temps are usually around 30-45C, never really much higher.

Thanks for any help, it is truly appreciated!

Hi @nicklamn,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP Envy x360 is freezing and crashing randomly during normal use, even with updated drivers and BIOS. Let’s go through some steps to narrow down what could be causing this.

1. Check for Windows Updates

Go to Settings > Windows Update and make sure all updates (including optional driver/firmware updates) are installed.

Restart your laptop after updates are applied.

2. Run HP Support Assistant Diagnostics

Open HP Support Assistant from the Start menu.

Run a full system diagnostics test to check for hardware or software conflicts.

3. Update Graphics Drivers

Even if you believe they are up to date, manually download the latest AMD Radeon (780M) and chipset drivers from the AMD support site.

Reboot after installation.

4. Check Power & Performance Settings

Go to Control Panel > Power Options and set it to Balanced or HP Recommended.

In Advanced Power Settings, ensure processor power management is set to a minimum of 5% and maximum of 100%.

5. Disable Fast Startup

Sometimes Fast Startup can cause freezes.

Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power button does > Change settings that are currently unavailable.

Uncheck Turn on fast startup, then save and restart.

6. Memory and Storage Check

Press Windows + R, type mdsched.exe, and run a memory test.

Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
chkdsk /f /r sfc /scannow DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

These will repair system and drive errors.

7. BIOS Reset

Restart your laptop and enter the BIOS (usually by pressing Esc or F10).

Choose Restore Defaults, save, and reboot.

8. Test in Safe Mode

Boot into Safe Mode with Networking.

Use your system for a while to see if the freezing persists. If it doesn’t, a third-party program or driver may be causing the issue.

I hope this helps.
