HP Envy x360 Laptop

Hi, my name is Julia. I bought my HP Envy x360 laptop on roughly July 30th, 2017 prior to going to my first year in college. The laptop has been wonderful, but last night (in my college dorm room btw), after I typed my password into the login spot, it brought me to a black screen where I could only see the white mouse. When this screen would not show anything else but the mouse, I looked online for HP solutions. I followed HP Troubleshoot steps to restore windows, and it worked but took over two hours to do so. That next day (today), my twin sister, who also has the same exact laptop and got it at the same time that I did, had the exact same issue as I did, yet hers could not restore. She was also in the same dorm room as me, so same connection. She had to go to the college laptop support in the library for hours, and eventually using different methods they restored hers so that it could turn on and go past the black screen, just like mine did. But tonight, when we both went to open our laptops, after signing in our passwords both of the laptops had a black screen with only a mouse showing. After hours we restored it, due to how long it took (we restored by completely off, then turn on hitting f11, then following the troubleshoot steps--we got these directions from hp website). The irony of us both having this sudden problem on the same day is strong yet odd.

We tried calling hp, but a two hour call led to being hung up on, most likely by accident but we are still concerned. We keep calling but it never lets us go all the way through to a non-computer generated person. We need our laptops for college classes each day, and we have upcoming tests that need to be done on laptops. Please please whenever you have a chance let me know what we should do! We need a permanent solution beyond rebooting a few times a day, because that is time consumming, which is awful if we are in a test period in class. Please if anyone has any solutions let us know, or at least what the problem is/how to fix it. We have a year warranty, but we just want to know what we are dealing with. Any advice is so immensely appreciated. Thank you!!!!

~Julia

there are many people with the same issue

you need to disable "app readiness" in the msconfig services - look in the forum for other "black screen" posts and the instructions are there

THIS IS A WINDOWS UPDATE ISSUE!!
There are multiple threads today with the same issue.
I have a Spectre x360 and had the issue.
After uninstalling the most recent windows updates, I did the the following:

Do a search on your computer for msconfig.
Open System Configuration
Go to Services tab and disable App Readiness
Reboot your computer.

This worked for me!

It would be great if you can confirm that it also works for you.

@monkeymers

Have you reinstalled the last Windows update to check that it resolves the problem permanently?

Me, I've temporarily disabled Windows update until I know that it won't kill my screen again.

Hi,
Thank you all so so very much! I just disabled windows update and app readiness, and my laptop restarted. So far it is all good, but I will let you all know if the black screen issue comes back.
Thank you so much!! ☺

Hi,
So (after my previous post) my computer doesn't have Internet access. Luckily no black screen so far but I am unable to even see the usual icon for connection on the bottom right Taskbar. I went to settings, network and Internet, and it says "Not Connected. You aren't connected to any networks." I tried pressing Show Available Networks but nothing at all came up, and when I tried troubleshoot it said that an error occurred and a problemember is preventing troubleshoot from starting.
Also this is happening to my twin sister who did the same thing that I just did on her laptop. Any ideas? Restarting it again didn't fix it. Thank you!

Sorry for the 3rd post in a row, but I just realized that when disabling app readiness and Windows update all got disabled, which possibly explains my Internet issue. How do I just disable windows update and app readiness thru the system configuration--service? The only buttons available were enable, disable all, and then OK. I only put checks next to the two when disabling but clearly that didn't work, and I can't right click. Thanks for any and all advice!
