HP Mini XH029U
Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit)

We have had a hard drive that we couldn’t remember what was on it for a while now, so last night I took the hard drive out of my notebook and put in the “forgotten” one. I got an error message saying that the hard drive did not have an operating system, so I then switched back to my original hard drive. This is where the problem starts: It would turn on just fine, but it would never complete the start-up for Windows (this notebook runs Windows 7 in case that’s important). In the Root Menu Settings, I was able to access HP QuickWeb. I tried starting Windows from there and was unsuccessful; it would act as though it were loading and then nothing would happen. The screen never froze though. I then tried a hard reset by following the instructions on this website. Now it gets to the HP intro screen, and then blinks. I ran a Run-In Test, and got these results: Memory Test: Passed SMART Check: Passed Short DST: Failed Failure ID: 64X5BR - 5AC9KD - XD7Q3F - 60RW03 Product ID: XF029UA#ABA Hard Disk 1 I then ran a Primary Hard Disk Self Test and was given this error message — Hard Disk 1 Quick (303). My warranty is way out of date, and I’m not super Tech savvy. If anyone can help me figure out what is going on and how I can go about fixing it, I would REALLY appreciate it!! Hello @TechIlliterate1

The Community has a TKB article on this matter and you may want to check it out >> https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebooks-Knowledge-Base/Storage-Hard-Disk-Drive-corruption-and-replac...

I have checked it internally and the error code you provided tells me that the tested hard disk drive 1 (HDD) has failed

Since this is faulty HDD/hardware component, you will probably not be able to recover your files. If you want to attempt data recovery, please let me know and I may post additional instructions.

Here are your options on fixing the problem:

If your computer is with warranty period expired, you will need to replace the faulty HDD - buy new one on your own. There are variety of options - vendors you can choose from. You can get it online or from PC retail store, or from HP parts store http://partsurfer.hp.com/

You need HDD with the very same size as the current one or bigger (small will not work) - e.g. if your current HDD is with 500 GB capacity, your new HDD/SDD must also be 500 GB or with bigger capacity.  I recommend you consider HDDs with RPM 7200 as they as slightly faster, 5400 RPM is slower >> https://www.computerhope.com/jargon/r/rpm.htm

*** How to replace the faulty HDD with new HDD:  please, find info and instruction in your computer's manual or watch YouTube videos examples for your HP model.

If you do not want to do this on your own, please bring the computer (or ship it) to HP Authorized Service Center where the technicians will do this for you. If you are not sure where such a center is located, check these or contact HP for assistance in finding the nearest one for you:

Last part - once you replace the faulty component - you will need to reinstall back your operating system - Windows or another. Let me know if you need assistance on how to reinstall Windows
