Windows 11 made a BIOS upgrade of my HP Omen dh0012ng. After a reboot the screen stayed black, no HP logo appeared. I made all the suggested solutions on the HP Support website, nothing helped.

I tried to downgrade the BIOS to a previous version via USB stick.

Only the latest version creates a boot stick, that loads BIOS again on the notebook and flashes it, but in the end the screen stays black again. I downloaded nearly all previous versions of BIOS that are shown on the HP support site and created boot sticks with these setups but no one does anything when I try to boot from them.

Can someone help me to downgrade the crashed BIOS?

The notebook is out of guarantee but was working great, there is no hardware problem at all.

Hi @Chris9876567890,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your PC!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Perform a Hard Reset

  1. Turn Off the Computer: Completely power down your HP Omen 15.
  2. Remove External Devices: Disconnect all external devices like USB drives, printers, and external storage.
  3. Unplug Power Adapter: Disconnect the power adapter from the laptop.
  4. Battery Removal: If your model has a removable battery, remove it. If the battery is internal, skip this step.
  5. Drain Residual Power: Press and hold the power button for at least 15 seconds.
  6. Reconnect Power: Reconnect the power adapter (and reinsert the battery if it was removed).
  7. Power On the Laptop: Press the power button to turn on the laptop and check if the issue persists.

BIOS Recovery Using a USB Drive

Create a BIOS Recovery USB Drive:

  • Insert a USB drive into another working computer.
  • Download the BIOS update for your HP Omen 15 from HP's official website.
  • Follow the instructions on the website to create a BIOS recovery USB drive.

Enter BIOS Recovery Mode:

  • Insert the BIOS recovery USB drive into your HP Omen 15.
  • Press and hold the Windows + B keys on the keyboard, then press and hold the power button for 2-3 seconds, and release the power button but continue holding the Windows + B keys until you hear beeping sounds or see the HP BIOS Update screen.
  • If it doesn’t work, try the same process but replace Windows + B with Windows + V keys.

Follow On-Screen Instructions: If the HP BIOS Update screen appears, follow the on-screen instructions to recover the BIOS.

Reflash BIOS Using HP's BIOS Utility

Download BIOS Files:

  • Go to the HP support page and download the latest BIOS for your HP Omen 15 to a USB drive.

Prepare the USB Drive:

  • Follow the instructions provided on the HP website to create a BIOS flash drive using the downloaded files.

Flash BIOS Manually:

  • Insert the BIOS flash drive into the laptop.
  • Power on the laptop and press Esc repeatedly until the Startup Menu opens.
  • Press F2 to open the System Diagnostics.
  • Select Firmware Management or BIOS Management (depending on your menu options).
  • Follow the instructions to update the BIOS from the USB drive.

I hope this helps.

Hello Kuroi_Kenshi,

I have done all of your suggested steps but it didn't help.

With the BIOS Recovery USB drive the BIOS got installed and flashed, but after the reboot the boot logo ist still not displayed and the screen is just black again.

Because of that I can't follow your last steps to flash BIOS manually. When I press ESC nothing happens at all and the screen stays black.

@Chris9876567890, I see you were interacting with @Kuroi_Kenshi however, he's away for now and I'd love to help you out.

Thanks for the quick follow-up — I know how frustrating it is to stare at a blank screen when your system was running just fine before.

Since the BIOS recovery completes but the screen stays dark afterward, it does sound like the flash may not be taking properly, or there’s a mismatch in the BIOS version for your specific board revision.

Here’s what I recommend next:

Try Forced BIOS Recovery with Internal Display Reset:

Fully power off the notebook (press and hold power for 15+ seconds).

Plug in the BIOS recovery USB with the latest working BIOS version.

Now hold Windows + B (or Windows + V, depending on model), then press and hold Power for 2–3 seconds.

Release the Power button but keep holding Windows + B/V for up to 40 seconds.

If the fan spins up or you hear beeps, the system is trying to enter recovery—even if the screen stays black. Leave it alone for up to 5 minutes.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!

@Zoey7886, thanks for your advice.

If I try your steps with Win + B, then the Omen boots from the BIOS recovery stick, loads and flashes the BIOS, reboots and then stays black again, even after +5 minutes left alone.

If I use Win + V, then the screen "CMOS Reset (502)" appears and the notebook reboots after pressing Enter. The screen then also stays black after +5 minutes.
