OMEN Laptop - 15-ek0025tx
Microsoft Windows 11

Hi, I have a single 8GB RAM stick in my laptop. I am adding a Crucial DDR4-3200 16GB stick to the second slot, but when I install RAM, the caps lock button shows 3 Blinks followed by a 1 Second Pause and 2 Blinks. Can anyone help me with what the issue is?

The 8GB RAM stick works fine in both slots.

Hi @Asiad

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for laying that out so clearly—it really helps narrow things down. The Caps Lock blink code of 3 long blinks followed by 2 short blinks (3.2) is HP’s way of saying there’s a memory initialization failure

Since your original 8GB stick works fine in both slots, the issue likely lies with the new Crucial 16GB module—either in compatibility or configuration.

Here’s how to troubleshoot it:

🧠 What the 3.2 Blink Code Means

  • 3 long blinks = Memory failure
  • 2 short blinks = Module not seated correctly or incompatible

🛠️ Steps to Resolve the RAM Issue

1. Check Compatibility

  • Your OMEN 15-ek0025tx supports DDR4-3200 SODIMM, but some Crucial modules may not play nicely with HP’s tighter BIOS settings.
  • Make sure the 16GB stick is non-ECC, unbuffered, and 1Rx8 or 2Rx8—HP laptops can be picky about rank and chip layout.

2. Try the 16GB Stick Alone

  • Remove the 8GB stick and install only the 16GB module.
  • If the laptop still blinks 3.2, the 16GB stick may be incompatible or faulty.

3. Reseat the RAM

  • Power off and unplug the laptop.
  • Remove the 16GB stick and reinsert it firmly until it clicks.
  • A loose connection can trigger the blink code.

4. Update BIOS

5. Try a Different Brand or Model

  • If the Crucial stick continues to fail, consider trying a Kingston, Corsair, or HP-certified module with similar specs.

Let me know how far you get with these steps. You’re doing all the right things, and we’ll get your OMEN running with that extra memory in no time 💪💻.
