OMEN by HP 16.1 inch Gaming Laptop PC 16-wd000 (7B9S0AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

I’m facing a strange issue with my HP Omen 16 laptop. After using it for a day, I shut it down normally. But the next day, when I try to turn it on, the first boot never works properly.

Each time I press the power button, the power light comes on, but the display stays completely black, nothing shows up. I try pressing the power button multiple times (turning it off and on again), and the same thing keeps happening. Then, after several attempts, it eventually boots up normally like nothing was wrong.

This has started happening consistently every day, and I’m not sure what’s causing it.

Hi @Asliqr, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding the black screen on first boot each day.

I understand you’re using the OMEN by HP 16.1" Gaming Laptop (16-wd000 series) with Windows 11, and you're encountering a black screen on first boot each day, where the power light comes on, but no display is shown — until you retry multiple times. This is related to firmware/BIOS, graphics initialization, or hardware sleep states (Modern Standby or Fast Startup). Let’s go step by step to resolve it.

1. Perform a Hard Reset

This clears residual power and resets hardware connections:

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Unplug the power adapter.
  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  • Plug the adapter back in and try powering on.

2. Update BIOS and Firmware

Outdated BIOS or firmware can cause boot issues:

3. Disable Fast Startup (Windows Settings)

Fast Startup can sometimes cause black screen issues:

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do.
  • Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.
  • Uncheck Turn on fast startup.
  • Save and restart.

4. Check for Graphics Driver Conflicts

Sometimes the discrete GPU (NVIDIA) fails to initialize:

  • Boot into Safe Mode (press Shift while clicking Restart > Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings).
  • In Safe Mode, uninstall the graphics driver via Device Manager.
  • Reboot and reinstall the latest driver from HP or NVIDIA.

5. Connect to an External Monitor

If the screen stays black but the system powers on:

  • Connect an external display via HDMI or USB-C.
  • If the external display works, the issue may be with the laptop’s screen or GPU switching.
