Hp pavilon 15-n228sl
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

Help please !!!

I have an HP pavilion 15-n228sl.  It was with my kid sister and one morning she came and told me the laptop is no loner working. When you press the power buttton, the LED indidcator  of the power and and the wifi turns on, then the CAPS LOCK led blinks 2 times every two to three seconds. There is no display. Ive connected to it an external monitor via hdmi still nothing. I've read online and realized its a BIOS corruption. Ive tried  the steps provided here https://support.hp.com/nz-en/document/c02693833 by downloading the bios replacement file but to no avail.

When i plug in the usb drive with the bios update  files and  pressing and hold ng the Windows logo key  and the B key, the caplocks led stops blinking but nothing still happens. If I power it on without the usb, the caps lock led keeps blinking 2 times at a time but if i follow the steps in the link above with usb, the caps lock stops blinking but still the hp bios update screen never displays.

Ive reset the CMOS battery, reseated the RAM modules but still no luck.

Please help me because im getting fed up.

Why is it that the led light on the caps locks stops blinking when it try the usb update but still no display ?

Sorry to hear that.

It looks like BIOS chip replacement time.

Connect the power adapter.

Hold down the Windows key and the B key.

Use two fingers to do that and now you can press the power button. Do not let go of the two keys you are holding.

Sometimes it takes almost a minute before the notebook reacts and displays onscreen that it is recovering the corrupt BIOS.

When the notebook displays that it is recovering the corrupt BIOS,you can release the keys and let the notebook do its business with the recovery.

Did you ask your sister what happened before the notebook stopped working?

If she spilled a liquid on it or something else that drastic, you may be fighting a losing battle.

I've held those two keys for over 4 minutes but still no display. Any other way please ?

She said she powered the laptop on running on AC power without the battery attached and she accidentally tripped and got the charger removed. From then the issue started.

For it to affect the BIOS there may have been a BIOS update in progress.

You might have to have the BIOS chip replaced with a new one programmed with a valid BIOS ROM file.

If you have done everything that you have described earlier to resolve the issue, a newly programmed BIOS chip may be your only means of resolving the issue.

I dont think I cant get one in Ghana here.

I guess I have to throw it into a thrash can then.

But what I dont understand is the caplocks led stopping its blinking when i plug in the usb with the bios file  when attempting the recovery. It looks as if its reading from the usb but nothing happens.

Without the key combinations but a pluged in usb drive with the bios file, the caps lock led blinkings for some time and then stops blinking like as if its reading from the usb but still nothing displays.

Without a plugged in usb, the caps lock led keeps blinking until i power it down.

Can you please explain this ?

The way it works with the USB flash drive with BIOS file is that you do not plug it in while the notebook is already on.

With the notebook off, plug it in and then press the power button.

From what you just described, you may not have followed the instructions closely enough.

Thanks for the assistance. Really appreciates the help.

Can it be replaced with any chip or its should be my device or model specific ?

HP Recommended

It must be replaced by an identical chip unless it has been superceded by another.

The BIOS ROM file will have to be one from the BIOS family your notebook's system board is part of.

This kind of work is generally done by HP, a notebook shop,  or a BIOS mod company.
