I'm currently trying to install linux from a USB onto my laptop which I normally use an external monitor for because the LCD was broken. After learning that I wouldn't be able to view the bios with the external monitor and seeing that the LCD could be removed to default to the external, I removed the lcd as well as the chip for the AUX_PO and Main-PO from the motherboard and left the cable that would connect to the lcd connected to the mobo as it didnt seem removable without de-soldering. The pc still functions just as it did with the broken lcd but still wont default to the external monitor even with the lid closed and using an external keyboard. I was able to operate the bios blind and disable secure boot referencing a video with a similar HP laptop but when the 021 code screen comes up im unable to identify the 4 digit authentication code to disable secure boot because it refuses to post to the external monitor. Is there a list of these codes or anyway I can get the code based off of the laptop serial number? Or a step im missing to get the laptop to post to the external monitor instead of defaulting to no display? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi @ollboo,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are facing an issue with the broken monitor and BIOS issues. Here’s a plan to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem:
1. Check External Monitor Connection:
- Ensure the external monitor is properly connected and powered on.
- Sometimes, pressing Fn + a function key (like F4, F5, or F7) can toggle between display modes. Look for icons on the function keys that might indicate display options.
2. Default to External Monitor:
- With the laptop powered off, try connecting the external monitor and booting the laptop. Some laptops automatically detect the external monitor when the internal display is not functional.
- If you haven’t tried already, reconnect the internal LCD temporarily and see if the BIOS screen displays on the external monitor while the internal LCD is still connected.
3. BIOS Settings Blind Navigation:
- Since you’ve already navigated the BIOS blind, try navigating to the Boot or Security settings. The 021 error usually pertains to issues related to boot settings or secure boot configuration.
- To disable Secure Boot, you may need to navigate to the Security tab in BIOS and look for the Secure Boot option. Ensure that it is disabled.
4. Authentication Code Issue:
- The authentication code required to disable Secure Boot is unique to each laptop and is generally not available in a list. It is specific to the BIOS configuration and the laptop’s security settings.
- If you are unable to find this code and need to proceed with Linux installation, consider contacting HP Support. Provide them with your laptop’s serial number, and they may be able to assist in generating or bypassing the code if needed.
5. Reset BIOS to Defaults:
- If you’re unable to get the external monitor to display, another option is to reset the BIOS to its default settings. This can sometimes be done by:
- Removing the laptop’s battery (if possible) and disconnecting the power adapter.
- Pressing and holding the power button for about 15-30 seconds.
- Reconnecting the power and turning the laptop on.

I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
