Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have a Pvilion Laptop with Win10 and when I try to boot it up, the HP logo shows with the icon that circles and then the screen goes black.  If I press the caps lock, no light shows up, there is no cursor, and the HDD light is off.

I know that the screen is NOT the issue as I can go in to bios with no problems, I can get in to diagnostics screen as well and the test said everything passed.

I know the screen works just up until the Win10 actually loads.

I have tried to boot into a usb drive with Win10 recovery and it goes to the black screen after the HP logo.  I have also tried to go to the recovery option from when I press the ESC key during boot but the menu never shows up and goes to a black screen as well.

Thanks.

Hi @KevinSuh,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're dealing with a frustrating boot issue. Here are some steps to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the black screen problem on your HP Pavilion laptop:

1. Check External Devices:

  • Disconnect any external devices (USB drives, printers, etc.) that may be interfering with the boot process and try restarting.

2. Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Power off the laptop.
  • Disconnect the power adapter and remove the battery (if removable).
  • Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the battery and power adapter, then try to start the laptop again.

3. Boot into Safe Mode:

  • Since you mentioned you can't get into recovery options, try this:
    • Turn off the laptop.
    • Turn it back on and repeatedly press F11 until you reach the recovery environment (if you can).
    • Once there, navigate to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings and select Safe Mode.

4. Check Boot Order in BIOS:

  • Since you can access BIOS, ensure that the hard drive is set as the primary boot device.
  • Restart the laptop and press Esc or F10 to enter BIOS settings.
  • Check the Boot Order settings.

5. Repair Startup:

  • If you can access the Windows recovery environment, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair. This may fix any boot-related issues.

6. Restore to a Previous State:

  • If you manage to get into the recovery options, look for System Restore to revert the system to a previous state before the issue started.

7. Check for Corrupted Files:

  • If you can access the command prompt from the recovery options, run:bash

chkdsk /f /r

  • This will check for and attempt to repair any disk errors.

8. Reinstall Windows:

  • If all else fails and you can’t access recovery options or boot into Safe Mode, consider reinstalling Windows using a USB drive. Make sure to back up any important data if possible.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Good afternoon.

First and foremost, thank you for your post.

1> I have no external devices attached.  I even made sure there were no dongles for keyboard/mouse.

2> I have tried the hard reset procedure:
* I have turned off the laptop.
* Disconnected the power brick and battery from the laptop.
* Held down the power button for more than 15 seconds.
* Reconnected the battery and power brick.
The laptop does the same thing.

3> Boot into Safe Mode:
* I have hit the ESC button during bootup and selected the F11 option to get the recovery menu but the screen does the same black screen.

4> I have changed the boot order multiple times as well but no change.

5> I can't get into the Recovery Menu to perform repairs.

6> Can't get in to the recovery menu to restore to a previous state.

7> Can't get in far enough to get a command prompt.

8> I can't even re-install windows as the laptop won't boot up far enough to get to the menu to re-install.

The only thing I can do are:
A> Get into the bios.
B> Hit ESC during boot to get into the diagnostics menu.  I have checked the system and the test results are that everything is fine.

Other than this, if I choose any other option, I get the black screen.

Thanks.
