I need some help, I'm having similar issues with my dv4. At start up I see it booting up and then I see the windows...four boxes and then the screen goes black. I can connect my tv through the hdmi output and see the login screen and its fine. When I power down by holding the power button the laptop restates and goes into different booting options where I choose safe mode. It boots up in safe mode on the laptop screen, it looks a bit weird when mousing over the bottom of the screen but it works and what happens is the fan starts working pretty loud and bottom left corner starts getting hot. I shut it down regularly and it restarts and then it goes through the same thing. Please help!

I had the same problem with an HP Pavilion dv4 1428dx where when I would power it on all it would do was light up and you could hear the cd drive kick in and then nothing. I tried all the suggestions that where mentioned and none of them fixed the problem. In the end the solution was so simple.
The problem was that the CPU had come loose and was no longer properly locked down and made it where there was not a proper connection between the mother board and the other parts of the laptop. I dissasembled the laptop to where I could get at the CPU and removed the brace that held it in place, which the cooling system is part of, under that is where the CPU is located. Look and see if the lock that holds it in place is full engaged, if it isn't it will case a break in the circuit between the power and the hard drive. Once I tightened this down and made sure the lock was fully engaged the computer booted up with no problems and has continued to do so since them. The owner admitted to me that it had been dropped a few times. I hope that all with same problem might find this to be the simple solution.

I'm having problems with my laptop (HP Pavilion dv4-1225dx) It will not start up but all the lights are on, the screen is black, and the only thing I hear is the fan moving. The caps lock and num lock keys have a blinking light. The power LED is on, the battery LED is on, but the hard drive LED is not on. This computer had the motherboard replace right before the warranty expired and now is not working again. Very frustrated and need help!!!
