Hi @OmegTubero

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP Pavilion G6 is stuck on a black screen during startup, which can happen for a variety of reasons including hardware issues, software corruption, or bootloader problems. Since you're unable to access the start-up menu with the ESC key, we’ll need to explore some other troubleshooting steps to try to get your system back to normal.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you resolve the issue:

1. Perform a Hard Reset

Sometimes, a hard reset can clear minor issues that prevent your computer from booting properly.

  1. Turn off the laptop.
  2. Disconnect the power adapter and remove the battery (if it's removable).
  3. Hold down the power button for about 15 seconds to drain any residual power.
  4. Reconnect the power adapter (leave the battery out for now) and try to turn the laptop on again.

2. Try to Access the BIOS (UEFI) Menu

Since you can’t access the start-up menu with ESC, try pressing the F10 key immediately after pressing the power button. This should open the BIOS (UEFI) menu.

  • If the BIOS screen opens, you can check for any hardware-related issues (such as the hard drive or memory not being detected).
  • While in the BIOS, you can also reset your BIOS settings to default (usually there's an option like Load Setup Defaults or Restore Defaults) and then save and exit.

3. Boot to Safe Mode or Advanced Boot Options

If you can’t access the BIOS or the system still won’t load, you can try forcing the system into Advanced Boot Options:

  1. Turn off the laptop.
  2. Turn it back on, and as soon as the HP logo appears, immediately press and hold the Power button for about 10 seconds to force a shutdown.
  3. Repeat this process 2-3 times (turning the laptop on and off in this manner). On the third restart, Windows should attempt to load Advanced Startup Options.
  4. Once the options appear, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.

4. Check the Display (External Monitor)

It’s possible that the laptop is working, but the screen isn’t displaying correctly. You can try connecting the laptop to an external monitor or TV via HDMI (if available) to see if anything shows up.

  • If the external display works, the issue may be with the laptop's screen or graphics hardware.

5. Perform System Diagnostics

HP laptops typically have built-in diagnostics that you can run:

  1. Turn off the laptop.
  2. Turn it back on and immediately press the ESC key repeatedly.
  3. If the start-up menu appears, select F2 to run the system diagnostics.
  4. Check the results for any hardware failures (particularly for the hard drive or memory).

6. Try Booting from a USB or Recovery Disk

If the laptop isn’t booting into Windows, you can try booting from a USB drive that contains a Windows recovery tool or installation media.

  1. Create a Windows installation USB drive on another computer using the Windows Media Creation Tool.
  2. Insert the USB drive into your HP Pavilion G6.
  3. Turn on the laptop and press F9 or ESC (if accessible) to access the boot menu.
  4. Select the USB drive to boot from and see if you can either repair the system or reinstall Windows.

7. Check for Hardware Issues

  • RAM Issues: If you’re comfortable opening the laptop, you can check if the RAM is properly seated. Sometimes, reseating or swapping the RAM sticks can help resolve boot issues.
  • Hard Drive: If you hear unusual noises from the hard drive, or if diagnostics indicate a hard drive failure, the drive may be the cause of the black screen.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi @OmegTubero,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you’ve already diagnosed and resolved the issue! If pressing on the monitor cable connector fixed the problem, likely, the cable wasn’t seated securely during the CPU replacement.

Steps to Ensure Long-Term Fix:

  1. Turn Off and Unplug: Power off the laptop completely and unplug it from any power source. If the battery is removable, remove it as well.
  2. Open the Laptop: Carefully open the laptop again to access the internal components.
  3. Check the Cable Connection:
    • Locate the monitor cable connector on the motherboard.
    • Ensure it is firmly seated in its port.
  4. Secure the Connection:
    • If the connector has a latch or securing mechanism, make sure it’s properly engaged.
    • Check for any signs of damage or dirt on the cable or the connector.
  5. Reassemble and Test:
    • Reassemble the laptop carefully and test if the issue persists.
  6. Optional: If you frequently open your laptop, consider adding a small amount of non-conductive tape to ensure the connector stays secure.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
