Spectre Bang &Olufsen edition

After being on quarantine for months, I have been using my work computer instead. I tried to fire it up last night and the power light turned on for a few seconds then went out again. I figured the battery was DEAD due to no use for a few months so I plugged it in to charge overnight. This morning the power button lit up again, but then turned off after a few seconds, again. This laptop is less than 2 years old with not that much usage. Could I need a new power cord perhaps?

The battery is likely dead (you mentioned this).  Long term non-use can cause the battery to completely drain.  At least in the case of business class machines, the battery can deteriorate to the point where it cannot recover.

I am not familiar with this specific HP model, but in my experience the symptom you described can be caused by a power supply not supplying enough power due to being faulty, but it's not likely to be the problem. But if you have a volt meter, you can check this to be certain it's not your laptop's AC adapter. Or if you have any spare AC adapters you can also test it with known-good chargers as well. Failing components soldered on to the motherboard can also be a symptom of what you described and others. Also, detach your battery and see if it does the same thing without it attached to the laptop, but please only do that without the power adapter plugged in. Replacing a battery or power adapter or an HDD or DVD drive that is short-circuiting and drawing too much power, is much cheaper than replacing a motherboard in my opinion.

Also in my experience an aged dead battery doesn't usually cause a computer to not boot if you have your AC adapter supplying power to the laptop. But again, I'm not familiar with this specific laptop model.
