Hi everyone,

I’m using an HP Spectre x360 (Product ID: 4WW36UA#ABA) with an 8th Gen Intel processor, and I’ve been running into a really frustrating issue with the BIOS Setup Utility:

*The BIOS UI is extremely slow and unresponsive

*Scrolling is painfully laggy

*Touchscreen and touchpad don't work at all in BIOS

I’ve tried navigating using the built-in keyboard, but the lag makes even simple tasks like changing a boot order or toggling settings really difficult. It takes several seconds for key presses to register sometimes.

Here's what I’ve already tried:

*Entered BIOS via F10 at boot

*Performed a BIOS reset to default settings

*updated the BIOS firmware

From what I understand, it's normal that the touchscreen and touchpad don’t work in BIOS, but the extreme slowness seems abnormal. Has anyone else experienced this with this or similar models?

Hi @frankricher,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding slow BIOS navigation in the HP Spectre x360!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Update BIOS: Ensure that your BIOS is up-to-date. HP frequently releases updates that can resolve performance or compatibility issues. You can check for updates using the HP Support Assistant or by visiting the HP Drivers and Support webpage. Follow these steps:

  • Type "support" in the taskbar search box and select the HP Support Assistant app.
  • Click "Updates and tune-ups," and then click "Check for HP updates now."
  • Download and install any available BIOS updates.

Use Physical Keyboard: Ensure you're using the physical keyboard attached to your notebook, as the touchscreen and touchpad are typically disabled in BIOS mode.

Clear CMOS: Sometimes resetting the BIOS settings can resolve performance issues. You might need to consult your service manual for steps on how to clear the CMOS for your specific model.

Check and Disconnect Peripherals: Disconnect all external devices connected to the laptop. Occasionally, peripherals can cause conflicts when accessing system settings.

Hardware Diagnostics:

  • Use HP PC Hardware Diagnostics to run tests outside the operating system to determine hardware functionality. You can access this by restarting your computer and pressing F2.

I hope this helps.

Hi @frankricher,

Thank you for the update, and I’m glad to hear that resetting the CMOS helped restore touchscreen functionality!

You are correct that the touchpad will not work in the BIOS environment, this is expected behavior since the BIOS only supports basic input devices like the built-in keyboard (and in some cases, limited touchscreen functions).

Regarding the BIOS still feeling a little sluggish:

This can sometimes happen if peripherals are still connected, so try booting into BIOS with all external devices disconnected.

If you haven’t already, I’d recommend running the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (F2 at startup) to rule out any hardware-related issues.

If the BIOS is already updated to the latest version and performance remains slightly sluggish, that’s usually within normal limits for this model, but as long as it’s responding consistently to inputs, it should be okay.

Thanks for letting us help you out! If you're all set, please mark this post as 'Accepted Solution' so I can do a virtual happy dance!

If you need anything else, I'm all ears (or rather, all text). Just let me know!

Stay fantastic, and have an amazing day ahead!
