Microsoft Windows 11

HP Spectre fails to start after being completely powered down overnight. When you press the start button, its light turns on briefly, and the caps lock light flashes for a second before both go off. After that, the system becomes unresponsive—no beeps, no further activity.

Hi @NJMJS

Welcome to HP Support Community!

We noticed that this thread hasn't had any updates in a while since your original post; while this is rare, we didn't want this post to remain unanswered, so, here's the solution to your query. We hope it helps you and everyone viewing this post 😊

Based on your description, brief power light, a single Caps Lock blink, and no further activity, this appears to be a hardware-level startup issue, possibly related to power delivery, memory, or BIOS corruption. Let's walk through some steps to help resolve this:

Perform a Hard Reset

This clears residual power and resets embedded controller logic.

  • Disconnect the AC adapter and all peripherals (USB devices, SD cards, etc.).
  • If your model has a removable battery, remove it.
  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect only the AC adapter and try powering on.

Attempt BIOS Recovery

If BIOS corruption is suspected:

  • Plug in the charger.
  • Press and hold Windows + B, then press and hold the power button for 2–5 seconds.
  • Release the power button but keep holding Windows + B until you hear a beep or see the BIOS recovery screen.

If successful, the system will attempt to recover the BIOS.

Reseat RAM and SSD

Improperly seated components can prevent boot.

  • Open the bottom panel (if comfortable doing so).
  • Remove and reinsert the RAM and SSD securely.
  • Clean contacts gently with a microfiber cloth.

Check Power Adapter and Battery

A faulty adapter or battery can cause startup failure.

  • Try a known-good HP-compatible charger.
  • If the laptop powers on without the battery, consider replacing it.

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, the problem may lie with the motherboard, CPU, or embedded controller. In that case, please visit the nearest HP authorized service center, the service team will check and assist you.
