Hello,

My issue regards the BIOS/computer setup password on my laptop, which was not bought new. It was acquired as a refurbished product and being a Kenyan student, it is not possible for me to acquire this product new.

The original owner had, unfortunately or fortunately set a BIOS/computer setup password which would have to be reset in-order to access BIOS features and more specifically virtualization extensions.

While virtualization is pretty basic technology nowadays, it appears that it is disabled on this laptop, by default and one hence has to manually enable it.

Being able to access and use the virtualization features on this epic laptop would allow me to learn software development  mostly by use of virtual machines.

Having searched the forums, the most common response to this issue is advice to contact HP support but just before that, it honestly looks like calling HP would probably cost me $1 per minute which is dead expensive.

Just to confirm. Is there another work-around this?

Cheers and thanks in advance.

Hi:

Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do to help you, since HP will no longer supply the required SMC.bin file that is used to clear the BIOS password.

That was the only way it could be done.

HP issued this document recently...

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c06368824

Also the forum rules were amended on 1 March 2019, which no longer allow us to help with removing passwords.

Rule 4.d...
