HP Laptop

Hello ~ I am having a problem with my HP laptop. I ran a Total Defense scan overnight, and this morning the screen was black.

I hit the panel on the keyboard and a msg eventually came up on the bottom of the screen ~~~ Fixing ( C ) Stage 1 : 43% ( 440,556 of 1,001,728 ) Total 15% ; ETA 3:30:00 <- kept increasing. After half an hour, it was still in the same place, so I turned the device off. I now have the device back on, the HP logo is on the top, and there is a circle of dots that are rotating, and it has been that was for a long while. Is it possible it is just stuck in the one place? I am on a different computer writing this,  no way to enter anything on the disabled computer that I know of. Is there something I can do?

It may be a good time to admit I am not great on the computer, but I can usually fix minor issues. Many thanks in advance for any help!   Karen

Excellent description and a great diagnosis. It is greatly appreciated.

Let's try testing hardware failures if any.
