I have a hp 14-fq0013dx that originally had 4GB, with windows 64-bit installed, and it has a x64-based processor.
Updated BIOS.
I added a second RAM stick, matching model and specs. (2 x Crucial CT4G4SFS824A 4GB DDR4-2400 SODIMM)
Tried to boot, the laptop got stuck in HP logo every time.
Diagnostics:
boot with only stick A in slot 1: works
boot with only stick A in slot 2: works
boot with only stick B in slot 1: works.
boot with only stick B in slot 2: works.
stick A in 1, B in 2: does NOT work
stick A in 2, B in 1: does NOT work
Boot with Esc and entered diagnostics: System Info shows 8GB installed. The MOBO recognizes total RAMs. Ran RAM diagnostics, passed.
At this point, I'm pretty sure the ram sticks are good, the slots are functional, and the seating is correct.
(btw, at any point, if I go back to single stick 4GB, then Windows starts normally).
Changed boot order to start from USB Windows installation flash drive: Get blue screen with "system thread exception not handled"
Stuck.
Looked for hidden BIOS option that enables/disables dual RAM slots. Couldn't find any.
Looked for HP confirmation that the laptop supports 2x4gb. Only found confirmation in the Crucial website. HP website doesn't say much.
Thinking about returning the 2x4gb sticks and buying 1x8gb. Unless someone here knows a trick.
Thanks
