I have message "hard drive not exist" I can feel and hear it spin up...
I can run live cds but it wont see any partition type. i.e. fat, ntfs, etc.
I suspect it was dropped as it has a few keys missing.
win 7 on a 5400 rpm hdd. (can someone answer me why theyre still using 5400 rpm? I have been using 10k for YEARS.
I digress back to the compaq.
warranty just expired, of course. I would get the extended warranty, wait the 30 days for it to kick in then have them do it for free. (Warranty is like $100)
I would replace the hdd but what if the board portion of the fixed disc controller is fried?

More likely the files than the OS....You can get an external usb to SATA adapter and connect the old drive to the computer as an external drive, and copy and paste old files to new drive. If the drive is giving off a SMART error it is unikely you can effectively "clone" or copy it to another drive in its entirety, which is the only way to "save" the OS. We can link you to a free download of a Windows 7 OEM DVD for your version of Windows 7 and you can get drivers and most preinstalled software off the old drive if it is still able to be "read" on another computer.

This is how i solved this issue. This occured afteradrive in a hp 2000 laptop really did die. Installed a brand new drive and got the 3FO message.
I went into the bios and shut down secure boot
I also enabled legacy mode, the suggest against this but it worked.
I rebooted , choose the cdrom drive and reinstalled windows 8.
After that the boot manager takes care of boot
no more 3fo
Hope it helps

I am sorry, but to get your issue more exposure I would suggest posting it in the commercial forums since this is a commercial notebook. You can do this at http://h30499.www3.hp.com/hpeb/
I hope this helps.
