Hi
My laptop has been struggling to boot up properly, I ran HP tests on it and it failed the Short DST test.
The failure ID is: 6APQ9G-7PN8KB-MFPWL1-60W603.
I assume this means the hard drive is failing, the laptop is no longer under warranty, can I buy a new hard drive and replace it? If so what hard drive do I need?
Cheers

Yes it is hard drive failure
You can buy good branded 2.5 inch SATA hard drive or SSD
Use HP Recovery media to factory reset after replacement of HDD
Or you could clean install Windows 10 Home is your laptop came with or upgraded to Windows 10

Your can salvage data from failed HDD:
you can follow one of the following methods:
1) Create LiveCD from another computer. Boot from this disc in your laptop, then copy the files from failed HDD to another external hard drive connected to notebook.

2) Take out the failed hard drive out. Connect it to another computer using SATA to USB adapter. Use Windows explorer to copy the files you need from HDD to another external hard drive.

You can try ordering HP Recovery USB specific to your model, from HP technical support.
https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/bph07143
Or you can clean install Windows 10 Home in your system as I suggested.
Windows will be automatically activated after installation while connected to internet
