@Warren73, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

If you're unable to reset your HP Notebook password because the system doesn't recognize your security questions, don’t worry, there are a few alternative ways to regain access to your device.

If You're Using a Microsoft Account

If you sign in with an email (like @Outlook.com, @hotmail.com, etc.), you're likely using a Microsoft account. You can reset your password online:

  1. Go to the Microsoft Account Recovery page.
  2. Follow the prompts to verify your identity and reset your password.
  3. Once reset, use the new password to log in to your notebook.

If You're Using a Local Account (Not Microsoft)

If you're using a local account and the security questions aren't working, try these steps:

Check for a Password Reset Disk (if created earlier)

  1. Insert the USB password reset disk.
  2. On the login screen, click Reset password.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions.

If you don’t have a reset disk, proceed to the next option.

Use Another Admin Account (if available)

If another user account on the PC has administrator rights:

  1. Log in to that account.
  2. Go to Control Panel > User Accounts > Manage another account.
  3. Select your account and click Change the password.

Important Note on Security Questions Not Working

If your computer name is the same as your local user account name, Windows may not allow you to use security questions. In this case, Windows will prompt for a USB reset key instead.

Last Resort: Reset the PC

If none of the above options work, you can reset your PC from the sign-in screen:

  1. On the login screen, hold Shift and click Power > Restart.
  2. Choose Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.
  3. Follow the prompts to reset your device (you can choose to keep or remove your files).
