Envy 17 k-254na
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

Just taken delivery of my Envy 17-k254na, and need to access BIOS settings to ensure I can boot from USB to enable installation of Win 10/64 from ISO.

First hurdle.

How do I access BIOS and boot order settings?

I've looked around and can find nothing that is a) clear and b) works

surely it can't be this hard?!

help needed and thanks in advance for any clear guidance

Hello DaveR60,

From your machine being completely off, push the power button then tap F10 repeatedly right away. Follow on-screen key navigation guide and go into advanced, then down to change the boot order. make sure USB the first one on top. Save and exit, plug in USB and it should detect it and boot from it.

HERE is a guide to assist you if you need any help, and feel free to reply if you have any questions.

Thanks!

Hi Dave,

  1. Press the power button to turn on the notebook and repeatedly press f10 to enter the BIOS setup.
  2. Go to over to System Configuration and then down to Boot Options.
  3. If Legacy Support is enabled, change the boot order under Legacy Boot Order.
  4. If Legacy Support is disabled, change the boot order under UEFI Boot Order.

Hi,

Shut down the notebook by holding down the left Shift key as you click on Shutdown to temporarily prevent a hybrid boot.

Tap away at the esc key as soon as you press the power button to see if this will launch the Start-up Menu.  If it does, select f10 to enter the bios menu.

However, if you just need to boot from a flash drive, it may be easier to do this from the boot manager menu - ie Tap away at the esc key as soon as you press the power button to enter the Start-up Menu and then select the Boot Options Menu ( f9 ).   Use the arrow keys to highlight the flashdrive option and hit enter.

Hi DaveR60

once you enter in the bios by pressing the F10 key, pls navigate to 3rd tab of system configuration->boot options->disable the secure boot and enable the legacy boot. save setings and exit

press F9. Now you should be able to boot from USB disk

I just wanted to say thanks for the help given by all you guys. Given my last laptop just had a single button to interrupt startup, the HP approach just seemed a little evasive at first. As I'm getting more used to its characteristics we're getting along better!

I managed to get into BIOS/boot order. made the suggested changes and on restart my stick was picked up. I could then kick off the upgrade to Win10 which so far has gone quite well, and I'm not missing 8.1 already lol.

Although it seemed quite happy with those new settings in place for subsequent restarts, I've now put them back to the as delivered values, more for tidiness than anything.

Thanks again, and I'll be posting another query shortly on the topic of BIOS update
