HP EliteBook 840 G5 Notebook PC
Linux

Hi

I have recently bought an Elitebook 840 G5, I installed 16Gb of memory, a desent nvme and running Linux Mint. The computer works fine, its fast and responsive and I am overall pleased with it.

It is however one thing that bothers me and that is the start up procedure, I am guessing that it is related to Sure Start and secure boot since I have not encountered this issue on earlier generations of elitebooks. It takes a relly long time to start up and sometimes it even starts up the fan to max during startup, once I'm logged in everything works just fine.

I have tried various bios setting, disabled secure boot but it doesn't make any difference.

Is this normal for this generation or is there something else one could do to get it to start in a more normal manner?

Regards

Alex

Hello,
Good day. Thank you for reaching out to the Hp community. I would be delighted to assist you. Superb description and terrific troubleshooting. Kudos to you for that.

It sounds like the boot process of your HP EliteBook 840 G5 is slower than expected, possibly due to the Sure Start and Secure Boot features. These features are part of HP's security measures designed to protect your system from firmware attacks and ensure that only trusted software is allowed to run during boot-up.

Here are a few steps you can consider trying to address the issue:

  1. Check BIOS Settings: Enter the BIOS setup by pressing the appropriate key (usually Esc, F10, or Delete) during startup. Navigate to the Security or Boot menu and check the settings for Sure Start and Secure Boot. You may experiment with enabling or disabling certain features to see if that improves the boot speed.

  2. Update BIOS: Ensure that your BIOS is up to date. Sometimes, newer BIOS versions include performance improvements and bug fixes that can speed up boot times.

  3. Fast Boot Option: In the BIOS, look for a Fast Boot option and enable it if it’s available. This may help decrease boot time by skipping certain startup checks.

  4. Diagnostics: Run the built-in diagnostics on your EliteBook to check for any potential hardware issues.

  5. Check Boot Order: Ensure that your NVMe SSD is set as the first boot device. This can prevent delays caused by the system searching for bootable devices.

If you're not comfortable changing BIOS settings or if the problem persists, you may want to contact HP Support for further assistance.
