Hi @Sunshiney017,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Pavilion laptop is displaying a "locking" message on the screen and then shuts down, and you cannot turn it back on, there could be several potential causes for this issue. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try.

Check for Power Issues:

  • Ensure that the laptop is properly connected to a power source and that the power adapter is working correctly. Try a different power outlet and power adapter if possible.
  • Check if there are any loose or damaged power connectors or cables.

Battery Issues:

  • If your laptop has a removable battery, try removing it and then reinserting it. Make sure the battery is properly seated.
  • If your laptop doesn't have a removable battery, press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds. This can sometimes reset the internal hardware and resolve power-related issues.

Overheating:

  • Overheating can cause laptops to shut down abruptly. Ensure that the laptop's vents and fans are clean and not blocked by dust or debris. Use compressed air to clean them if necessary.
  • Consider using a laptop cooling pad to help with overheating issues.

Hardware Issues:

  • Sometimes, hardware components, such as RAM or the hard drive, can cause shutdown problems. If you are comfortable doing so, you can try reseating the RAM modules and checking the hard drive for errors.
  • If you recently added new hardware or made internal changes, it's possible that this could be related to the issue.

External Devices:

  • Disconnect all external devices (USB drives, printers, external monitors, etc.) from your laptop and see if it powers on without them. Faulty external devices can sometimes cause booting issues.

BIOS/UEFI Reset:

  • You can try resetting the BIOS/UEFI settings to default. To do this, consult your laptop's user manual for specific instructions as the process can vary.

Operating System Issues:

  • In some cases, problems with the operating system can lead to unusual behavior. If you suspect this might be the issue, you can try to boot your laptop into Safe Mode (if it's turning on) and then troubleshoot software-related problems.

Hardware Diagnostics:

  • Some HP laptops have built-in hardware diagnostic tools that can help identify hardware issues. Check your laptop's documentation or visit the HP support website for instructions on how to run these diagnostics.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
