I'm trying to boot from an external USB DVD drive. but it doesn't work. I have tried lots of permutations adjusting the BIOS but it still wont boot from the device, Instead, it boots directly to the Windows log-in screen.
I know my USB DVD drive is working as I've used it on other machines, and I've used the disk with other machines too.
Help!!

Hi:
I don't know what settings you changed in the BIOS, but in order to boot from a DVD, you need to enable legacy mode and disable secure boot.
See this link for the settings to change.
https://www.support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03736054/
Then you turn on the PC, immediately tap the ESC key to get the menu of options, select the F9 boot options menu and from that select the legacy USB DVD drive and press the Enter key.
Then the PC should boot from the DVD drive.
If it doesn't unfortunately I wouldn't know why not.
