Hello!  I am having an issue with my laptop.  It is an HP Envy (Model 15m-cn0011dx) running Windows 10.  For added context, my laptop is usually always plugged in to the power supply and is attached to a few other monitors and mouse.  Basically acting as a desktop.

A couple of weeks ago I went to turn on my laptop and the light on the power button would turn on, I’d hear the fan start, and a few seconds later it shut back down.  I open up the back and look at the battery and it is rather bloated looking.  Not an alarming amount of bloat, but clearly the battery needs to be replaced so I assume that’s the issue.  I buy a new third-party battery.

In the meantime I remove the battery, close the laptop back up and use it the same way I usually do with it hooked up to everything and it works just fine.  It can work without a battery just fine.

The new battery comes in a few days ago and I go ahead and install it.  I also calibrate it which means I let the battery drain to empty at least once and left it sitting for several hours before plugging it back in and turning the computer on again.  The day of installation the laptop is once again working fine.  Everything seems to be back to normal.  I left it on overnight to make sure the battery got a full charge.  However this morning when I went to go turn it on, once again I was having the same issue as before where the power button light would turn on and the fan would kick in, but nothing happens.

I’ve removed the battery again but I haven’t tried using it again without a battery yet.  Figured I should come here and ask around before I close the laptop back up again.

Hi @ficklebattery

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for the detailed description. Based on what you've shared, the issue appears to be linked to power regulation or system board behavior when a battery is installed.

Since the laptop works fine without a battery, but fails to boot properly with a new third-party battery—even after calibration—it’s likely that the system is rejecting the battery or encountering a voltage mismatch during startup.

Here are some steps you can take to isolate and resolve the issue:

1. Remove the Battery and Boot Without It

  • Power on the laptop with only the AC adapter connected.
  • If it boots normally, this confirms the issue is related to battery integration.

2. Inspect the Battery Connector and Pins

  • Check for any bent, corroded, or misaligned pins on the battery connector.
  • Clean gently with a dry brush or compressed air.

3. Perform a Hard Reset

  • Disconnect all peripherals and power
  • Hold the power button for 15 seconds
  • Reconnect power (without battery) and try to boot again

4. Update BIOS and Firmware

5. Test with Original or HP-Certified Battery

  • Third-party batteries may not communicate properly with the system firmware
  • If possible, test with an original HP battery or one certified for your model

6. Run HP UEFI Diagnostics

If the issue persists even with a certified battery and updated BIOS, the problem may lie in the power delivery circuit or embedded controller. In that case, a service technician may need to inspect the board.

Let me know if you'd like help creating the diagnostics USB or locating a compatible battery. You're approaching this methodically, and that’s exactly the right approach.
