HP ENVY Laptop PC 17t-cg100 CTO

Suddenly laptop is dead and power led is blinking 3 times on HP laptop. I am not sure what could be the problem with this laptop all of a sudden?

$800 laptop has finally become a brick. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Update: After disconnecting the power source, I held the power button for 15-20sec to drain the battery as suggested on one of posts and then reconnected the power cable. Now, the laptop is totally dead cold, 3 led amber lights are NOT blinking anymore. It just turned into a cold brick.

Even after removing the battery, no power to the laptop. Bad situation.

Hi @sundern,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The symptoms you’ve described with your HP ENVY Laptop PC 17, including the blinking power LED and now no response at all, suggest a hardware issue. Here’s a troubleshooting guide to help you diagnose the issue.

Understand the Power LED Blinking Codes

  • 3 blinks typically indicate a memory issue in HP laptops. This could mean that the RAM is loose, not seated properly, or has failed.

Basic Troubleshooting Steps

A. Perform a Hard Reset

  • Disconnect all external devices.
  • Unplug the charger.
  • Hold the power button for 30-60 seconds to ensure all residual power is drained.
  • Reconnect only the power adapter and try turning it on.

B. Inspect RAM Modules

  • If you’re comfortable opening your laptop:
    1. Turn off the laptop and unplug it.
    2. Remove the back panel.
    3. Locate the RAM modules.
    4. Remove and reinsert them to ensure they’re properly seated.
    5. If you have two RAM sticks, try removing one and testing each stick individually in different slots.

C. Check the Battery and Charger

  • If the laptop still doesn’t power on, check if the power adapter is working by testing it on another device or using a multimeter.
  • Try powering the laptop without the battery (only with the adapter) to see if the battery is causing the issue.

Advanced Troubleshooting

  • BIOS Recovery: Attempt to restore the BIOS by holding the Windows Key + B while pressing the power button.
  • Inspect for Damage: Look for any signs of damage to the motherboard, such as burn marks, swollen capacitors, or a bent charging port.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
