Hi - had a machine presented with motherboard issues so a replacement was fitted. Everything fired up OK so motherboard was working. Machine did a reboot and suddenly it was doing a BIOS update. The power went off and now I cannot get it to power on again. Tried all the usual disconnect battery and keypress options but no power light. Everything seems dead.

Has anyone any other suggestions please?

Hi @Q_S,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused don’t worry let me help you.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • The exact model of your HP laptop.
  • Whether the BIOS update was initiated automatically or manually.
  • If you notice any signs of life when pressing the power button (fan spin, faint LED blink, or charging light when the adapter is connected).

In the meantime, here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

  • Power reset: Disconnect the AC adapter   Hold the power button down for 30–40 seconds, then reconnect only the adapter and try powering on.
  • Check adapter and port: Ensure the charger is working by testing with another compatible adapter or checking the charging LED.
  • CMOS reset: If accessible, remove the CMOS battery for a few minutes, then reseat it. This can sometimes clear a corrupted BIOS state.
  • External display test: Connect to an external monitor to rule out display issues.
  • USB recovery attempt: If the system shows any sign of power, you may be able to create a BIOS recovery USB drive from HP’s support website and attempt recovery.

If the laptop remains completely unresponsive (no lights, no fan, no charging indication), it may point to a failed BIOS flash or power delivery issue on the new motherboard

I hope this helps.
