HP Pavilion Power
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Sometimes - without a clear reason - my laptop decides to go out of sleep mode while in my bag.
When it does this the fan turns on, but as there is no actual air flow all this does is heat up the laptop and drain the entire battery.
I think a possible solution might be to ensure the laptop can't get out of sleep mode while the screen is down. Is it possible to somehow do this?
Any alternative suggestions of course are also welcome!

The problem with any new laptop is Win10 -- as MS decided to implement a new hibernation scheme BY DEFAULT.

While the good news is that this is supposed to dramatically shorten the re-boot time, the bad news is that something as simple as pressure on the touchpad can awaken the laptop.  My guess is that this is what is happening to yours (presuming it has a touchpad).

I have a similar problem with my HP laptop, so I changed the power plan to (1) disable Fast Startup (the new hibernation scheme), and (2) shut down the laptop completely.  While this does take longer to restart the laptop, since I have an SSD, that only takes a few seconds, and the big PLUS is that it does not restart on its own when in the bag.

@Florianc,

Welcome to HP Forums,

This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips,

Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out 🙂

As I understand, your notebook does not go into sleep mode when you close the lid,

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

What is the product number of your device? Use this link to find it: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03754824

When was the last time it worked fine?

Were there any hardware/software changes made?

Have you tried any troubleshooting steps?

Did you check the power settings?

Let’s try these steps to resolve the issue:

Change the power plan settings:

  1. In Windows, search for and open Control panel.
  2. Make sure the View by setting is set to Small icons, and then click Power Options.
  3. Click on “Choose what closing the lid does”
  4. Change the settings to “Sleep”

Update Windows:

  • In the Windows search bar, search for and open Check for updates.
  • If there are any available updates, they begin installing automatically.

Check for updates from HP:

  1. In Windows, search for and open HP Support Assistant.
  2. In HP Support Assistant, click My devices, and then click Updates in the window for your device.
  3. Click Check for updates and messages.
  4. If new updates are available, make sure the checkbox next to each update is checked, and then click Download and install to download and install the updates.

Disabling hybrid sleep in Windows:

  1. In Windows, search for and open Control panel.
  2. Make sure the View by setting is set to Category, and then click Hardware and Sound.
  3. Click Power Options.
  4. Click Change plan settings for the power plan that is selected.
  5. Click Change advanced power settings.
  6. Expand Sleep, and then expand Allow hybrid sleep.
  7. Select Off from the On battery drop-down menu, and then select Off from the Plugged in drop-down menu.
  8. Click OK.
