HP Laptop 17-2003ca
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

Looking in the BIOS, I see no feature to turn on or shut off fast boot. I want to be able shut off fast boot to dual boot with Windows 10 and Linux and I need to do this.

Thank you so much. I'll need a little time to digest and try this.

I will post back with results.

Switching off the Fast Start setting removes the database that is used to provide that faster startup.

I've had Fast Start switched off for a long time.  I would rather the system start from the OS each time.

If stopping Fast Start does not provide the results you want,

and / or

IF you want Fast Start enabled,

Call up the setup and Check the box next to the option.

Reboot the computer - the "faster start" database will be rebuilt.

I followed everything uneventfully until here:
Windows Key + X > Menu drop down list, choose/tried both Windows Power Shell and Windows PowerShell (Admin), and issued:
shutdown/s/t/0 (and as many variants I could think of) and produced:
The term 'shutdown/s/t0 (and others) is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet, function, script file, or operable program. .... verify that the path is correct and try again. I couldn't go any further.

Too bad, as I was hopeful for this.

Any thoughts?

Windows key + X + (then) A  (admin cmd prompt)

Type / past command:

shutdown.exe /s /t 0

NOTE:  The spacing has to be just right.

The actual command target (taken from a shortcut I created years ago):

C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe /s /t 0

Just so you know -- fast boot is a BIOS thing; FastStartup is a Windows thing.  They are not the same.

And the limiter in the BIOS that prevents booting Ubuntu is Secure Boot -- not fast boot.

Ok, thanks for jumping in.

I shall withdraw.  Smiling.

I have corrected.

Thank you, for your very spirited effort. Unfortunately, your offerings didn't help in the end. Until WAWood responded, I was preparing myself at trying to install Linux over the Windows install. I am happy to hear your report that WAWood knows about this.

@WAWood. Interestingly, I am following a guide from the Ubuntu forums for dual-booting that states to turn off fast boot. I was preparing myself, to go ahead and install Linux over the Windows install, if that can still be done. I'll hold off on that for now. Secure boot is now off in UEFI/BIOS and fast startup is off in Windows. Thank you.

You are welcome.

Sorry I fell off-track.

I edited my original response after @WAWood jumped in.

Yes, Fast Start is different.  Although not related, the information is worth knowing.   Personally, I don't like Fast Start, but I'm old with a background based in another time.  Smiling.

I could not find a BIOS simulator for your exact model - I did find one for the 17 by000x series (it is now posted in my original answer). The reference might be useful.

Side Bar:

I could not find the Service Guide for the 200x series.  Given that I don't know what is in the machine, this lack-of-service-guide might be important - I simply don't have the hardware knowledge to know for sure.
