I have an HP Model 17-ca0012ds laptop. I recently went thru a windows update, and now I can’t get the laptop to respond. After several attempts, it did finally display the login screen and allow me to enter my password, but all it gives me is a black screen. It does have a full charge on the battery. Someone suggested that I removed the battery temporarily, but I believe the battery is internal as I cannot find a way to eject it. When I press the power button, it makes a small clicking sound and whirs for a moment, but then nothing ever happens. Any advice (other than “buy a new laptop”) will be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance

When you turn on your laptop, does hp logo appears normally? Is their any important data in your laptop that you need?

The laptop does have data I need.

When I press the power button, a small light comes on on the side of the base and there is a brief whirring sound, but the screen doesn’t respond — no logo, no boot up procedure, just a black screen.

You need professional help since you tried the power reset, and it doesn't even show the logo, so you can't check any recovery options. You also need your data safe first. I recommend visiting the nearest HP service center for repair, tell them upfront that data recovery is priority #1 before any fixes. Or, if you have a trusted local laptop shop nearby (especially out of warranty), take it there instead for quick diagnostics and drive extraction.
