pavilion dv6

I was given an Hp pavilion Dv6 a while ago and I've been trying to get it working but I don't know what's wrong with it

when I plug it in the power ring illuminates and when I press the power button the fan and other LEDs light up but the screen does not. When I press Ctr alt delete it restarts and now the screen backlight comes on but nothing is displayed. When plugged into an external monitor a cursor shows up in the corner of the screen for a few seconds then dissapears I have tried putting disk in it but I still get nothing no bios or boot screen just blank.

Thanks in advanced if you can help me!😜

Hey there! Thanks for getting back to me!

You are absolutely correct. If you are receiving one blink on the Caps Lock and Num Lock LED's then you are receiving a "CPU Not Functional" error.

You can try reseating the CPU, making sure thermal paste is properly applied, and then reinstalling the fan, however since you have already taken the Notebook apart and checked the connections, cleaned out all of the dust, and checked on the thermal paste, you may only have a couple of options at this point for a resolution.

You can go to the HP PartSurfer page to order a new CPU. Here is your HP Pavilion dv6 Maintenance and Service Guide in case you need it also. Alternatively, you can use the Warranty Checker to check the warranty status of the Notebook. Please use the following link to create yourself a case number to contact us:

Step 1. Open link: www.hp.com/contacthp/

Step 2. Enter Product number or select to auto detect
Step 3. Scroll down to "Still need help? Complete the form to select your contact options"
Step 4. Scroll down and click on HP contact options - click on Get phone number

Case number and phone number appear.

Hey @Destroyas,

Before I provide troubleshooting documentation, I would like to take a minute to welcome you to the HP Support Community, where you can ask questions, find solutions and get help from others!

Please remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices, as these could cause some issues.

I understand that you have already tried to connect an external Monitor or TV to your Notebook to see if the screen displays properly there and all you seen was the cursor. Please take a look at the Computer Starts but Screen Remains Blank documentation. It will ask you about:

  • Performing a hard reset
  • Recovering the notebook BIOS using a key press combination
  • Reseating the memory modules

Have you tried to see if you can test for hardware failures?

Have you tried to start in Safe Mode?

Did you receive any error messages?

Do you have recovery media for this Notebook?

If you require further assistance, I would be more than happy to help! Please just re-post with the information required from above. Please let me know the detailed results of the troubleshooting steps provided. Could you also please provide me with your Model Number (How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?) and Which Windows Operating Systems you are running.

When we have come to a resolution, please share what worked for you with others by marking this post as an Accepted Solution. If you would like to show your appreciation for my efforts today, please take a second to click the Thumbs Up button below.

Have a wonderful day!

I disconnected all usb devices from it and tryed to hard reset it and that did not work.

I tried to recover the bios but it has no hard drive (it was given to me without a harddrive and battery but it used to run windows 7) i saw there was a way to get the bios on a usb and install it on a computer and i followed the steps to do that but the bios software was different to the one in the steps the software i got was trying to update the bios on my main pc  and the one in the steps could install it on the pc it was on or on a usb.

The model number of my computer is "dv6-2109AX"

I tried the hardware failures test but it dident work I don't  get any error messages just a blank screen and on an external screen i get a cursor in the top left corner for a few seconds that looks like this ---> |

I have no recovery media. I think it may be that the bios is missing or corrupt. the computer reacts to certain key combonations like "ctrl alt delete" it causes it to restart and holding  the windows key and "b" while a usb in in it, it will rapidly restart it

Thanks for helping me!

Hi @Destroyas

You had said that you were given the Notebook without a hard drive or a battery. Does it have a hard drive in it right now?

What Windows Operating System is on your Notebook if you do have a hard drive?

What kind/size of hard drive does it have?

Did you receive any error messages?

Have you tried Reseating the memory modules?

Follow these steps to remove and reseat memory modules for troubleshooting:

  1. Turn off the computer and disconnect the power cord.
  2. Remove the cover to access the memory.
  3. Remove all of the memory modules in the computer.
  4. Reinsert all memory modules.
  5. Replace the service cover, battery, and power cord.
  6. Turn on the computer.

Do you have any LED lights illuminating? If so, is it the Caps Lock and/or the Num Lock LED's? LED lights can indicate a variety of error conditions. If your computer makes one or two short beeps before starting, this is normal and your computer is telling you that BIOS startup was successful. If your computer beeps and does not start, a more serious hardware issue is likely occurring. If you do see LED lights, please refer to Computer Does Not Start and Emits an LED or Beep Code to help identify the beep codes or LED light patterns.

Have you tried cleaning the computer vents with compressed air and then restarting the Notebook?

I look forward to hearing your response.

So tried to reset the memory modules and nothing happened. It

currently has no hard drive.

No error messages but the number lock and caps lock keys blink on start up. They only blink once and the link you gave me says this means the CPU is not functional.

I cleaned the airvents a while ago and there was alot of dust, I had a look at the cpu and the thermal paste was all dried up (The comuter did not work before I opened it )

When I turn it on after about 5 - 10 minutes the CPU gets very hot. That is the main reason I opened it,  But even after cleaning the vents it still gets very hot to a point where it is to hot to touch.

Thanks
