Laptop power off and battery dead

My laptop battery was dead and it went off. I plucked in my HP adapter and it is not charging instead, it showed a white light with a blinking orange light. 

So right now, the laptop is off and it's not charging too.

I had this happen to me on a different model laptop and what I did was as follows:

1) Bought a replacement battery

2)Booted the PC with that battery -- as that model PC will not boot if the battery is dead

3) Removed the battery, put back in the old battery (without turning off the laptop)

4) Old battery would now charge

5) When charge was full, PC would boot using old battery again.

So now, I have a spare battery in case this happens again.
