Thank you for your prompt reply. I had previously used the HP battery checker which showed the battery condition as Normal and 100% charged. I will work through all you suggestions. The laptop is nearly two years old and out of warranty.

You are welcome.

Personally, I'd just change out the battery with a compatible replacement.

Tests aside and regardless of the results - you say the battery is not working as expected.

A consumer battery that is two years old is - in my opinion - a good candidate for replacement.

I do not have any personal stake in whether you replace the battery in your computer.

Personal choice.

I never fight with a battery - also personal choice.  Smiling.

Good Luck.

While searching on the Internet I came across a reference to resetting the battery but although it gave instructions for several HP models it did not include the HP Pavilion. Is it possible to do this for that model, and do you know where I can find guidance, please?

Thanks for your further help. I have reset the battery and that seems to have made a difference. It is probably too soon to say it has solved the problem but I am optimistic!

You are welcome.

All good then.

True - a two year old battery might temporarily respond to being reset.

True, too, that at two years, many consumer batteries might be ready to be replaced.

General advice...

If you wish to do so, get ahead of the situation and research where you will purchase your new battery.

If you use your system on battery regularly, consider getting the new battery sooner rather than later.

If you plan on traveling, consider replacing the battery before you are away for any extended time.

Keep your backups current - this is "always do this" kind of advice, of course.

Back up your critical / personal data to other than the local machine.
