My computer will shut down without any warning on battery.  It has been doing this for months.  I have checked the battery and the test says it comes back OK in every category.  The last time it shut down I had only used it for about 5 minutes on battery; it was NOT hot.  I got the cord, plugged it in, and it started right up.  I immediately checked the battery; it was at 95%.

I talked to someone else with an HP and he said his computer was doing the same thing.  I have my warning when the battery gets low but the battery is NOT low when it shuts down.

I was able to buy a new battery and you are correct that fixed the problem.  I never thought that could be the problem since it passed the battery checks.

Welcome to HP support community.

I have a few steps listed below that should help you resolve this concern:

Unplug the charge and use the laptop until the battery drains to 15%.

Turn off the laptop and turn it back on after 30mins.

Reinstalled Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery under device manager:
1) In the search box, type and open “Device Manager”.

2) Expand “Batteries”.

3) Right-click the "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery" that is listed there.

4) Click on “Uninstall”.

5) At the prompt put a check in the box to remove the current driver

6) Shutdown the computer.

7) Remove the battery for minute and then put it back in.

😎 When the computer comes back up it should automatically find the driver.

9) Go to Device Manager.

10) Expand Batteries.

11) Right-click the "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery" that is listed there.

12) Click "Search automatically for updated driver software"

Do the same thing with Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Embedded Controller.

Restart the computer and the issue should be fixed.

I hope that helps.

Thank you for trying to help me.

I did your instructions and uninstalled the battery.  I tried to reinstall the drivers for both the battery and control  method and the computer stated that I had the most up to date drivers.  I unpluged my computer and with 5 minutes it shut down again.  Any other suggestions?

I was rereading your post and realized that you told me to update the "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Embedded Controller".  It is not under my battery and when I googled where to find it, I did not get any good answers.

Thank you

Run Extensive system test to check for hardware failures.

1. Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.

2. Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the F2 key.

3. On the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu, click System Tests.

4. Click Extensive Test.

5. Click Run once, or Loop until error. While the test is running, the time remaining and test result for each component are shown on the screen.

So I ran the extensive test last night.  it went through 2 full iterations without any errors.  I escaped when it started its third this morning.

Update the Bios using HP Support Assistant.

Download and run the HP Support Assistant from this Link: Click here

HPSA will automatically search for all the latest drivers for your Notebook

  1. Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.

Click Updates in the My notebook pane

  2. Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.

Updates list in HP Support Center

  3. Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.

  4. Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.

  5. Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.

Run battery test using steps mentioned in this document:- Click here

I hope that helps.

So I downloaded the HP support.  Checked for updates.  The only update that was needed was for HD graphics, which I then downloaded and updated.  I then performed the battery check which again came back OK.  In addition, there was a battery check in the diagnostics area which I again ran and it came back OK.  The computer was put in hibernation and when I I turned it back on I forgot to plug in.  The battery was at 94% full.  I thought maybe it was fixed.  2 minutes later it shut down without any warning.

@Lya-4 Looks like this is an intermittent issue and the best way forward, is to check with an alternate adapter from a local tech store or a friend, see if that charges your battery to a point that it doesn't turn off while the device is on battery, if that doesn't work either, we may have a failed battery that isn't getting detected on the hardware test due to this being an intermittent issue, and I suggest you talk to HP support and discuss your options, follow the below steps to get started:

1) Click on this link - http://www.hp.com/contacthp/

2) Click on Sign-in or select the product using the below step:

3) Enter the serial of your device.

4) Select the country from the drop-down.

5) Click on "Show Options".

Fill the web-form, to populate a case number and phone number for yourself!

Also, if you are having trouble navigating through the above options, it's most likely because the device is out of warranty, if yes? please send me a private message with the region you are contacting us from,

here's how private messages work: Click here for details.

If you wish to thank me for my efforts, you could click on "Accept as solution" on my post as the solution should help others too.
