My HP laptop model 15-fd0xxxx sometimes will not turn on when I press the Power button. Nothing happens for at least 5 minutes. The light on the power button does not come on either. Then, after 5 minutes it comes on. This only happens once in a while.

I know how to check the error log on the Event Viewer. The last time it would not turn was May 1st at 11AM here is the Event Viewer from around that time:

Warning 5/1/2025 10:49:19 PM DistributedCOM 10016 None
Warning 5/1/2025 10:47:08 PM DistributedCOM 10016 None

Warning 5/1/2025 10:36:56 PM Win32k (Win32k) 701 None

Windows is up to date and I ran ALL of the tests available thru the Trouble Shooter that is available through pressing Esc on boot up and then F2.  All tests pass!!

Any idea what would cause this?  What else can I check?

Thank you.

@Kipmc77, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
You're dealing with a sporadic power-on delay issue with your HP 15-fd0xxxx laptop, where the device doesn't respond for several minutes after pressing the power button. Since you’ve run the onboard diagnostics (F2) with no errors and Windows is up to date, this is likely a hardware-related delay during POST (Power-On Self-Test) or a firmware/power delivery issue. Here's how to narrow it down and what else you can check:

Static Charge or Embedded Controller Glitch

Sometimes, static electricity buildup or a glitch in the embedded controller (EC) can cause delayed power-on behavior.

Fix: Perform an EC reset (power drain):

  • Disconnect the AC adapter.
  • Press and hold the power button for 15–20 seconds.
  • Reconnect the AC adapter (without battery, if removable), and try turning it on.

BIOS Firmware Bug or Delay

There could be a delay caused by a BIOS/UEFI issue, especially related to power state transitions or hardware initialization.

Fix:

  • Update the BIOS to the latest version from HP support site for your model.

Faulty Power Button or Button Board

If pressing the power button doesn't even light the LED instantly, the button itself or the ribbon cable to the motherboard could be intermittently faulty.

Fix:

  • Try pressing firmly and holding for 3+ seconds instead of tapping.
  • If the problem persists, consider having the button board or power cable inspected/reseated/replaced.

Battery or Charging Circuit Issues

A problematic internal battery or the charging circuit may prevent power-on until a threshold voltage is reached.

Fix:

  • Boot the laptop with battery disconnected (if it’s removable or if you’re comfortable opening the chassis).
  • See if it powers on immediately using only AC power.

Event Viewer Clues

The DistributedCOM 10016 and Win32k 701 warnings are usually not critical and don’t cause boot issues, especially since they're timestamped before the system powered off (and likely during last use). They don’t suggest a root cause here.

Thermal or Hardware Wake Delay

Sometimes, thermal protection or a failing component (e.g., SSD, Wi-Fi card) could introduce POST delays.

Fix:

  • Disconnect peripherals and boot with minimal configuration.
  • Use HP Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) to test the storage and memory again just to be thorough.
  • Check Task Scheduler and Startup Programs for firmware update tasks that could trigger after shutdown.

Additional Suggestions

  • Run sfc /scannow and DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth just to rule out system corruption.
  • Use a bootable Linux USB (e.g., Ubuntu live disk) to see if the delay exists outside Windows — to isolate OS vs hardware issues.
  • Consider monitoring battery wear level via HP Support Assistant or powercfg /batteryreport.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I realized that above I had posted the error messages from 11PM . That was the wrong time. The correct time was 11AM when the computer would not turn on.

Here are the Error Logs from the correct time,11AM

@Kipmc77, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you so much for posting your query! My colleague @Max3Aj is currently out, but don't worry – I’ll be taking over and making sure we get this sorted for you.

I’m here to help, and together, we’ll work through this!

1. Turn Off Modern Standby (If Not Needed)

You can disable Modern Standby (S0ix) and force the system to use S3 traditional sleep instead, which is more stable on some HP models:
Check if Modern Standby is enabled:

If it lists “Standby (S0 Low Power Idle)”, then it's enabled.

2. Disable Power Saving on Network Adapters

Open Device Manager

Go to Network Adapters

For each one (especially Wi-Fi Direct Virtual Adapter, Realtek/Intel Wi-Fi), do this:

Right-click > Properties > Power Management

Uncheck: “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”

3. Update BIOS and Network Adapter Drivers

Visit HP's driver support page for your 15-fd0xxxx model.

Official HP® Drivers and Software Download | HP® Support

Make sure BIOS, chipset, and Wi-Fi/Bluetooth drivers are up to date.

I truly hope these steps help get things back on track. If you have any questions or need any further clarification, just let me know – I’m happy to guide you through it and make sure everything works perfectly.

Take care, and I hope you have an amazing day ahead! 😊
