When I turn on my laptop, the picture appears on the screen with the pin number field as normal.  After I enter my pin, the screen goes blank.  All I see is the mouse cursor.  Nothing else appears, no matter how long I wait.

Hi @Ionosphere1,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The issue you’re describing sounds like a problem with the Windows login process, possibly related to system files or user profile corruption. Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue.

Boot into Safe Mode:

Safe Mode starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and services. If you can log in successfully in Safe Mode, the problem is likely related to software or drivers that are not essential for basic operation.

Steps to boot into Safe Mode:

  1. Restart your computer.
  2. As your computer boots, repeatedly press the F8 key (or Shift + F8) before the Windows logo appears to access the Advanced Boot Options menu.
  3. Select "Safe Mode with Networking" and press Enter.
  4. Log in with your PIN or password.

If you can log in successfully, you can try to perform a system restore or troubleshoot software that may be causing the issue.

Perform a System Restore:

If you can boot into Safe Mode, try restoring your system to a point when it was working fine.

Steps to perform a System Restore:

  1. Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type rstrui and press Enter.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to choose a restore point and restore your system.

Check for Corrupted System Files:

Use the System File Checker (SFC) to scan and repair corrupted system files.

Steps to run SFC:

  1. Boot into Safe Mode (as described above).
  2. Open Command Prompt as an administrator (search for "cmd", right-click, and select "Run as administrator").
  3. Type sfc /scannow and press Enter.
  4. Allow the scan to complete and follow any on-screen instructions.

Create a New User Account:

If the problem persists, it might be related to a corrupted user profile.

Steps to create a new user account:

  1. Boot into Safe Mode.
  2. Open the Settings app (Windows key + I).
  3. Go to Accounts > Family & other users.
  4. Click "Add someone else to this PC" and follow the prompts to create a new user account.
  5. Restart your computer and log in with the new account to see if the issue is resolved.

Check for Driver Issues:

Sometimes, outdated or corrupt drivers can cause login issues.

Steps to update/reinstall drivers:

  1. Boot into Safe Mode.
  2. Open Device Manager (right-click the Start button and select "Device Manager").
  3. Look for any devices with a yellow exclamation mark and update or reinstall the drivers for those devices.

Reset Windows:

If none of the above steps work, you might need to reset Windows. This will reinstall Windows but give you the option to keep your personal files.

Steps to reset Windows:

  1. Boot into Safe Mode.
  2. Open the Settings app (Windows key + I).
  3. Go to Update & Security > Recovery.
  4. Under "Reset this PC", click "Get started" and follow the prompts.

These steps should help you diagnose and potentially fix the issue with your HP laptop not booting up after entering the password.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I started the laptop and kept clicking on f8.  Instead of going into safe mode, it just booted up normal.  I restarted it to see if it boot up fine with no intervention and it did.
