You're very welcome.

I think you will be good to go by reinstalling W10.

Thanks

I just pulled the drive back out of the laptop, and I am saving all his personal stuff (Pics, Music, Links, etc.)  Fortunately he didn't keep a lot on the hard drive.

I will post results when I am done

When I tried to bood from the disk, I get this message:

The Selected boot device failed. Press enter to continue

and I am taken back to the options screen

Burn the ISO file to a DVD using the CD Burner XP software I posted.

I use it all the time.  Never had an issue making a bootable DVD with that program.

I think it is possibly a bad DVD (and I don't have any left).  Going to try a diffreent USB (plenty of those)

HP Recommended

I just downloaded that software - USB burn is not an option, and the file is much too large for a CD

HP Recommended

Yes, that software only works on DVD's and CD's, and you would need a DVD-R to put the file on as it is over 3 GB.

I was able to get the laptop recovered using the USB.

Thanks again for the help!

Anytime.

Glad to have been of assistance.
