Hi @Tully3,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP Pavilion laptop screen is black, but the keyboard lights up and the computer is running, it could be due to several reasons. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue.
- Check the brightness: The screen brightness may be turned down too low. Press the brightness button on the keyboard to increase the brightness.
- Check the display settings: It is possible that the display settings have been changed, and the laptop is set to an external display. Press the Windows key + P to open the Project menu, and select "PC screen only" to switch to the laptop's internal display.
- Try an external display: Connect your laptop to an external display to see if the issue is with the laptop's display or graphics card. If the external display works, then the issue is with the laptop's display.
- Restart the laptop: Restarting the laptop may solve the issue.
- Update the graphics card driver: Outdated or corrupted graphics card drivers can cause display issues. Update the graphics card driver by going to the Device Manager and selecting the graphics card, then selecting "Update driver."
- Reset the laptop: If all else fails, reset the laptop to its factory settings. Make sure to back up your data before resetting the laptop.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
