Recovery Media will restore the laptop to the original Windows 8. If you upgraded to Windows 10 there is a free option for installation media that Microsoft offers if you are interested.
If you didn't make your Windows 8 Recovery Media using the software on the laptop-you can order it from here:

Immediately after powering on start tapping the Esc key. This will open a menu where F2 System Diagnostics is an option. Tap F2 key and run the tests.

DST:Fail means the hard drive has failed/is failing and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will replace it. If not a retail 2.5" laptop SATA hard drive can be used-Western Digital,Seagate,Toshiba,etc

If you did the free upgrade to Windows 10 you have lifetime reinstall rights and won't need Recovery Media from HP. Just make a Windows 10 usb flash drive using the free Download tool at Microsoft site. Install the new hard drive, boot from the flash drive and install Windows 10. If asked for a license key skip it and Windows will activate when connected to MS servers.
