My Omnibook 5 shut down after a software update and will not restart. The power light is on as is the Amber charging light even though the adapter is disconnected

Hi @Lorraine721
Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.
I understand how unsettling it feels when the laptop shuts down unexpectedly after an update and then refuses to restart. Thank you for describing the exact light behavior—it’s very helpful in narrowing down the possibilities.
Let’s carefully go through some steps to bring the system back:
Step 1: Hard Reset
- Disconnect all external devices (USB drives, printers, etc.).
- Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds to drain residual power.
- Release the button, wait a few seconds, then press it again to try starting the laptop.
Step 2: Battery Reset
Since the amber charging light is on even without the adapter, the battery may be holding a charge incorrectly.
- If your model has a pinhole reset on the underside or side edge, gently insert a paperclip and hold for 5–10 seconds.
- Reconnect the adapter and try powering on.
Step 3: AC Adapter and Port Check
- Even though the adapter is disconnected, reconnect it firmly and check if the lights behave differently.
- Inspect the adapter and port for any damage or looseness.
Step 4: BIOS Recovery
Sometimes after updates, the BIOS may need to be reset:
- Turn off the laptop.
- Press and hold Windows key + B, then press the power button.
- Keep holding until you hear beeps or see the BIOS recovery screen.
Step 5: Run Hardware Diagnostics
If the system powers on but doesn’t boot into Windows:
- Press the power button and immediately tap F2 repeatedly.
- The HP PC Hardware Diagnostics screen should appear.
- Run the System Test and Battery Test.
These steps should help isolate whether the issue is with the battery, BIOS, or internal hardware. Since you’ve already observed unusual light behavior, the battery reset and BIOS recovery steps are especially important here.

You're very welcome, @Lorraine721!
I'm so glad to hear your Omnibook finally rebooted—and yes, based on your description, it definitely sounds like the BIOS recovery (Step 4) did the trick.
That step can be a lifesaver after a firmware hiccup during updates.
If the issue returns or you notice any instability, feel free to revisit the diagnostics (Step 5) or check for BIOS updates via HP Support Assistant once you're back in Windows. And of course, I'm always here if you need help again.
Wishing you smooth sailing from here on out!
Stay fantastic, and have an amazing day ahead!
