Hi @NDF59,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
I understand your HP laptop is not allowing you to input your password at the login screen. Here are a few steps you can try to resolve the issue:
1. Check for Keyboard Input Issues
- Try typing in a different field (like the username) to see if the keyboard is working.
- Use an external USB keyboard to test if the built-in keyboard is faulty.
- Make sure Caps Lock or Num Lock isn’t interfering with your password.
2. Restart the Laptop
- Hold down the Power button for 10 seconds to force a shutdown.
- Wait a few seconds, then power it back on.
3. Boot into Safe Mode
If the keyboard works in BIOS or Safe Mode, the issue may be with Windows:
- Turn off the laptop.
- Turn it on and immediately press F8 or Shift + F8 repeatedly (older systems).
- If that doesn’t work, interrupt the boot 3 times to trigger Windows Recovery Environment.
- Go to:
- Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart
- Then select Safe Mode with Networking
4. Use On-Screen Keyboard
At the login screen:
- Click the Ease of Access icon (bottom-right corner).
- Select On-Screen Keyboard and try typing your password with it.
5. Perform a System Restore or Reset
If none of the above work:
- Boot into Windows Recovery Environment (as above).
- Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > System Restore or Reset this PC.
I hope this helps.
Take care, and have an amazing day!
