My laptop turned off and now whenever I try to press the 'turn on' button the charging light just blinks a light three times. Does anyone know a solution and reason to this?

Hi @zoyanma9,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how worrying this can be when your HP laptop suddenly powers off and now only shows three blinking lights near the charging indicator; it’s usually signalling a hardware-level error. HP laptops use blink codes to indicate specific issues.

Here’s what the three blinks typically mean:

Reason

  • 3 long blinks + 2 short blinks (or just 3 blinks repeating) often point to:
    • Memory (RAM) failure or improper seating.
    • In some cases, a motherboard or BIOS corruption.

Solutions to Try

  1. Perform a Hard Reset
    • Disconnect the charger.
    • Remove the battery (if removable).
    • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
    • Reconnect the power and try turning it on.

  2. Reseat the RAM
    • If you’re comfortable:
      • Remove the back panel.
      • Take out the RAM sticks, clean contacts gently, and reseat them.
    • If you have two sticks, try booting with one at a time.

  3. Check Power Adapter & Battery
    • Ensure the adapter is working (test with another HP charger if possible).
    • If the battery is removable, try powering on with the charger only.

  4. BIOS Recovery
    • Plug in the charger.
    • Press and hold Windows + B, then press Power for 2–3 seconds.
    • Release Power but keep holding Windows + B until you see the BIOS recovery screen.

  5. Run HP Diagnostics
    • If the laptop powers on partially, press Esc repeatedly at startup → F2 for diagnostics.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
