Hi @Djrockstar82

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for sharing the details and for already observing the battery error and black screen behavior. I understand how concerning it is when your laptop powers on but doesn’t proceed past a blank screen.

Let’s work through a few steps to help bring it back to life.

Step-by-step actions to resolve the black screen

Perform a hard reset

  • Turn off the laptop completely.
  • Disconnect the power adapter and remove any connected peripherals (USB drives, external monitors, etc.).
  • If the battery is removable, take it out.
  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  • Reinsert the battery (if removable), reconnect the power adapter, and turn the laptop back on.

Check for display response

  • Shine a flashlight at an angle on the screen. If you see faint images, the backlight may have failed.
  • Connect the laptop to an external monitor using HDMI or DisplayPort. If the external display works, the issue may be with the internal screen.

Run a system diagnostic

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Press the power button and immediately begin tapping the F2 key repeatedly until the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics screen appears.
  • Select System Tests > Extensive Test and let it run.
  • If the screen remains black, proceed to the next step.

Reset BIOS using key combination

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Press and hold Windows key + V, then press and hold the Power button for 2–3 seconds.
  • Release both keys.
  • If the BIOS reset is successful, you may see a confirmation screen or the HP logo.

Use HP App to check battery health

  • On another Windows PC, install the HP App from HP App for Windows.
  • If your laptop becomes responsive again, use the HP App to run a battery health check under Diagnostics > Power.

Update BIOS and drivers (if accessible)

  • If the laptop boots successfully later, visit HP Software and Driver Downloads and enter your laptop’s model number.
  • Download and install the latest BIOS and graphics drivers.

If the laptop remains stuck on a black screen after these steps, repeat the hard reset once more and try booting with only the power adapter connected. If you’d like, I can help you identify your exact model and guide you to the correct BIOS update page. Just let me know the full product name or serial number from the label underneath the laptop.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
