@Helen193, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your HP Laptop not going past the grey screen while turning on!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand that you're seeing a grey screen when turning on your HP laptop. Let's try some basic troubleshooting steps to resolve this:

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Turn off the laptop completely.
  • Disconnect the charger and remove the battery (if removable).
  • Press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds.
  • Reconnect the charger (leave the battery out for now) and turn the laptop on.

Check the Display:

  • Try pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete to see if the Task Manager opens.
  • If the screen remains grey, connect an external monitor using HDMI or VGA and check if there's any display.

Boot into Safe Mode:

  • Restart your laptop and keep pressing F8 (for older versions) or Shift + F8 (for some Windows 10/11 systems) before the HP logo appears.
  • If you see options, select Safe Mode and check if the issue persists.

To assist you further, please share:

  • Your laptop model and product serial number (in private only).
  • The version of Windows you are using.

Let me know if the issue continues after these steps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
