*** I FOUND THE SOLUTION. *** So I'm posting this to help other frustrated new HP laptop owners out there.
This is for anyone who has a new HP laptop and struggling with this issue of having to press the power button more than once in order for it to turn on. After trial and error and researching the issue online, I finally realized that there's a very simple reason this is happening.
Apparently, new laptops aren't designed to immediately turn on when you press the power button the way older laptops used to do. With my old laptop, I would press the power button once and it would immediately start booting up. But I guess that's not the case anymore with the new models.
SO HERE IS WHAT WORKED FOR ME FOR MY NEW HP LAPTOP:
1) Make sure you've charged your laptop. If not, plug it into the charger and wait for it to start charging.
2) After you've given the laptop some time to charge, press the start button ONE time -- as you normally would. (just press and release the button normally)
3) Wait SEVERAL SECONDS without touching any keys (wait about 5 to 15 seconds)
4) Your laptop should turn on at this point.
The instructions above worked perfectly for my new HP laptop. However, I found out that with my dad's new Dell laptop, you don't press and release the power button. You have to press and hold the power button for a few seconds in order for it to turn on.
To be clear, I think these new laptops are actually booting up when we press the power button. But since we don't see any apparent signs that they're turning on, we assume nothing is happening. But it actually IS booting up. It just takes a few seconds for something to appear on the screen.
I hope this helps some other new laptop owners out there who encounter this frustrating problem!
