* more in my post:  Manually BIOS Update from USB-Stick/ Instructions followed, but there was a surprise *

________________________________________________________________________________________

Hi community,

I bought a HP Pavillion(17-g162ng) years ago. The BIOS prevented further updates for Windows 10.

I have created a USB stick with the current BIOS according to the instructions.

It is never found on the USB stick the correct file with the system board ID I need: 80B6.

This BIOS software I used:

F.45 RevA; May 17, 2017

F.43 RevA; Apr 20, 2017

My notebook:

HP Pavillion Notebook (W0X40EA#ABD)

Systemboard ID: 80B6

Bios: F.16

____________________________________________________________

EDIT: Please use the  Systemboard-ID from EFI-Partition: 080AE.bin

____________________________________________________________

One more question please: Where are the checksums for the BIOS files please?

Thanks a lot

@belldemon,

As I said, an update bios file's ID doesn't always match with the system board ID.

Your bios update usb drive has two sets of bios files, none of which matches with the system board ID but one of them is a right one. To find out which is a correct one you need to find ID of a stored bios file in the efi partition. Here's steps you need to follow:

1. Remove the USB drive that has two sets of bin files from the laptop and reboot and go into F2 Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.

2. Click Firmware Management.

3. Click the BIOS Update tab then click Select BIOS Image to Apply

4. Click the file system that appears on the screen.

5. Click EFI and navigate to \EFI\HP\BIOS\current.

6. You'll see "0xxxx.bin." This ID should match with one of the bios files on the usb drive, and that's the one you need to use to update bios.

A bios update usb drive is not bootable and it only works in conjunction with Firmware Management on HP PC Diagnostics UEFI. Here's the link to update bios. You need to go to the section "Updating the BIOS Manually from a USB Flash Drive (outside of Windows)."

HP bios update process is terribly lengthy and confusing to say the least. If you still have any problems, let me know. Good luck.

Hi Irwin6,

Thank you for your reply.

In my opinion, downloading the BIOS with a program is risky.

The chance is 50:50 that it will work.

I guess that HP doesn't even offer the BIOS with the correct system board ID. Feel free to correct me....

I just created a USB stick with the BIOS file sp100743.exe (F.54Rev.A; date: 2019-12-16). I created checksum MD5 on the file, which is correct.

I still can not find in the created folder on the USB stick my system board ID (080B6). Under BIOS/ Current it says 080AE and 080B1 for example.

Do I need to see my system board ID in the folders on the USB stick?

Thanks for your help.

@belldemon,

HP says an update bios file has to match the system board ID but we know this isn't always the case.

If you have HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI on the hard drive, the Diag's UEFI saves a current working bios file in the EFI partition, and you can view it from F2 the Hardware Diag's UEFI. So, your correct update bios file is the one that has the same  ID as the stored bios file. See the post below for more info.

Hello Tk_srq ,
thank you for your advice!

I looked at UEFI Diagnostic but did not use my previously created USB stick (sp100743.exe).

Under UEFI Diagnostic/ System Information I find the system board ID 80B6 , which I already know.

Under Firmware Mangament I found Bios Update and Bios Rollback but did not run them.

I find two different system board IDs only on the USB stick, but not in UEFI Diagnostic.
My problem was that I did not find the ID 80B6 of the system on the created USB stick.

Many greetings

I found this system board ID on the EFI partition: 080AE.bin
I picked these out as you said. Only when exiting the BIOS I had problems because suddenly nothing moved and I was unsure what was happening. At some point I turned off the notebook.

Whether I do the update, I'm still thinking about it.

Thanks a lot!
